Any thoughts on how to handle it? I don't find the Avatar to be particularly funny (and as everyone knows, I'm not a Bush fan), but at the same time it doesn't really bother me - I tend to just blow (so to speak) by it when he posts.

 
Hmmm thats a tough one. It is kinda annoying, but if we ask him to change it that could open a huge can. I'm interested to hear some others' thoughts..

It doesn't break any rules. It may be annoying but lots of things are. I don't think we should start moderating on annoyance..

That kind of sums up my feelings. If it isn't obscene or degrading (as in bigoted), I think it should be allowed.

 
I agree. now if the W would pull it out and start chowing down that would border on obscene.

Frank, do you mind sending a brief note to hack thanking him for keeping an eye out and contacting us, but explain to him what we just discussed?

By the way, here's the follow-up PM from hack:

a guy picking his nose isn't obscene?
would you want to watch anyone do that in public? repeatedly? forget who it is or who you think it is. most people i know would avoid looking at someone doing that over and over again. chief executive, mother in a minivan, the guy working on the neighbor's yard... doesn't matter. it's not something i'd care to see and i'm gonna gather that neither would you if given the choice.

and i'll take it a step further: do you have kids? if you do, do they pick their nose in public? and if they did, would you discretely stop them from embarassing themselves or would you allow them to keep on diggin' until the hit friggin' gold?

whatever, i'll let it drop. but if you could *suggest* to redman change his icon, i'd appricate it.

if it's about putting an icon up that illustrates redman's contempt for bush, there are a BAZILLION images out there that do just that. i'm just asking asking for an image minus the sinus digging.

I don't agree with him at all, I'm sick and tired of the freak'n hyper sensitivity to anything that could be even slightly offensive to someone. One of my biggest pet peeves is the sense of entitlement everyone seems to have lately. If anyone feels even the slightest put out they feel like they're owed something. It always pisses me off when I see someone complain about something in a restaurant and expect to get free desert.

I've seen worse avatars, as soon as we start telling people what avatars they can have is the day we start telling people what opinions they can and cannot express. It's not "obscene" in my opinion. I see kids picking their noses all the time in public, sometimes eating it, sh#t they show that stuff on Americas Funniest Home Videos. This dude needs to get over what ever personal vendetta he has against Redman. Maybe I'm just in a pissy mood but I say screw em.....

 
For what it's worth, I'm with slacker on this one. I can think of one Avatar we asked be changed - it had a woman flashing her breasts. At the time, we had a couple of female members, and while they didn't object, we could see why they would - and we want to be somewhat "family friendly".

But for cryin' out loud - nose picking?

At some point, people have to realize that being human means enduring behaviors that you may not like. I go back to the cursing thing - if you don't like it, you don't want to be exposed to it. But you quickly learn that there are going to be times and places that will have just that behavior. You learn to live with it - you may try and avoid it when you can, but when you can't, you live with it.

And quite frankly, who the hell looks at the Avatars once they become "familiar"? I look for different ones - they tend to catch the eye.

What if someone feels that Family Guy is a subversive offering that undermines the moral fiber of the country and wants all such Avatars removed? Or feels that on a Husker board no Avatar should be anything other than Husker-related; he finds it offensive that everyone isn't "pulling together"?

This sense of entitlement, as slacker put it so well, begins to wear thin after a while...

 
Nose picking is obviously one of the only thinks that W is good at.

If it bothers him , dont look at it....???????
