Sig Limits?

Just had a question about signature limits... I'm sure its been discussed before but either I missed it or forgot.

Anyway I'm seeing a lot of people with just full pictures and using them as a "signature". I mean mostly its coming from users I don't really recognize and are either new or just not the regulars, but I believe they are just finding a picture they like and think they should just put it there so they have something.

Its one thing to have a sig that you made and just designed it pretty big compared to others, but to just put pictures there is distracting and takes a lot of space in a thread. So I was just wondering if we allow this if not what should we do?? Just pm them and explain to them to try and resize it or remove it?

Well this is certainly something I can't answer....are we worried about the size of the picture? copyright violation? or is it simple just too obnoxious?

Just the size of the pictures... I have even seen some members say to another user "Hey (whoever) take that picture out of your sig its way to big".

Its not a big deal just thought I would ask what the rule is with the signatures here and if there was any limit to enforce.

A number of members have, over the years, complained about sig pics - too many or too big. Causes them to have to scroll to much, etc. They end up turning off the option to display members' sig pics in their Control Panel.

We've never established a size limit that I recall, but we certainly don't want any that are more than, say, 600 pixels wide - and I'd argue more like 200 pixels is more than enough. If someone has their monitor set to 800 x 600, a sig pic larger than that will cause the screen to stretch horizontially. All the posts above and below it will also be stretched, which means that someone with a really low resolution (or using a mobile device) would have to scroll horizontially to see each post. Right now, we have the post size set to 650 pixels.

If the person(s) with large sig pics post a lot, then the amount you have to scroll to read a thread really increases. Can get very tedious to read the Board.

I can't find a setting that allows us to set the height and width of pictures in the signature area; we can set the total number of bytes, but that won't affect the picture sizes at all. In other words, if we decide to try and enforce a size limitation, we can't do it automatically; we'd have to get the properties of each sig pic, then ask the member to resize it. However, some of those pics are not hosted by the members; they simply link to somebody's web site. They won't be able to control the size of the picture in that case. All they could do is remove it.

I don't have a good answer for this; about the best I can suggest is that if we get complaints about a particular picture, we PM the member and ask that they resize it or remove it, and inform them that if they don't, we'll remove it.

That's the way we have done it in the past. So I guess the short answer is we have no official policy. As with most things we let the members determine the boundaries.
