One thing that going after a JUCO DE suggests is that the kids coming off of a redshirt year --- and the younger guys subbing now... are not the future --- or, at least, not the immediate future.
Walker Ashburn, Donovan Vestal, and Tobi Okiyemi all come off a redshirt year and will be freshman next season. We have three young DE's --- Jason Ankrah (a sophomore next year) and Josh Williams (a sophomore or junior next year... not sure which w/o looking it up) and the converted LB, Eric Martin (who will be a junior). So... with meredith having one position locked down (he will only be a junior next year).... we really have only one open DE position available and then the back-ups. That we have 6 scholarship guys for those positions --- all young (Ankrah, Williams, Martin, Ashburn, Okiyemi, and Vestal) would suggest we have no need for a DE at all... unless this crew of 6 are not where they need to be --- or not where they need to be yet.
Going for a JUCO if he were a 5 star rated top 5 in the Juco ranks would be one thing... but Carter is a 3 star guy not heavily recruited by others. Why go after such a guy when we have 6 youngsters available for 1 position ... unless there are indications that the younger guys are not looking so hot.
In any event... seeking after a JUCO at DE ... and, in particular, this DE...seems to suggest problems
