The Effects of Coaching Changes...

We all hear, on a weekly basis, about a coach or coaches, that need to be fired. Or at least they think need to be fired.

I also hear a lot about how recruiting isn't very strong for Nebraska..

Well, sit down and think about it... Would you want to commit to a school that keeps changing coaching staff? Callahan goes, and so does some of his people. Bo comes in, hires a few of his guys. You take a hit on recruiting right there. We fire Shawn Watson, new offensive scheme (which was needed), and we take another hit on recruiting. Carl leaves for a HC job, we hire a rookie DC, which I personally don't have a problem with, but that takes another toll on recruiting. When you guys say that a coach (assistant or HC) needs to be fired, its just going to set our program back a step, and hurt our recruiting even more than what it has in the last 5-6 years. We are moving forward, maybe not as fast as some want, but as long as its a progression, thats all you can ask for, as our coaches and players are young. You learn and grow, something we are doing very well.

Like the topic of getting a new OC.... ok, we get a new OC, then what? Who do you hire? Who wants to come to Nebraska under a rookie HC? So fire Bo?

Ok, so we get a big name OC who is willing to be under Bo, then what? We have committed players decommit? We change our offensive scheme once again, and take 2-3 steps backwards? Then that following year, your even more unhappy, then what? Fire him? Its just going to be a vicious circle if you fired someone because YOU don't agree with things.

Leave it all alone and build on it as it is. He has the guys he wants in the places he wants. Now just set the cruise and build on it.
Agreed! We have a coach stability, our recruiting will get stronger. If I was a kid looking at schools, I would be sketchy on going somewhere, where a coaching change has occurred every 2-3 years. Then what you were recruited for, could all change. I don't know if I was completely clear in my initial post, but I am not game for any coaching changes. Even with Cotton. He brings kids here, and we are improving on the Oline.

I really like the offense we have built. It's not perfect but it suits us pretty well. Our WR's have gotten much better the last few years. And we have a crop of good RB's. I think we can get the recruits we need to play the skill positions for us. Our OL is lacking and we need to build the pipeline we once had. We know TMart gets a lot of heat but a friend reminded me...imagine if he was playing behind the pipeline from year's past...he would be Heisman-esque!

So while we have built a good offense to always be one of the best in the Big 10, I think our identity has to be on defense. Ultimately I think we have to have one of the best defenses in the country to win Big 10 championships and BCS bowls. This is what we have lacked and until we get this back, we are likely only going to go as far as we have recently been. The Blackshirts tradition is very strong and I want to see it return. TFL's, sacks, fumbles, INT's...we are missing this stuff because we don't have the playmakers on defense. This is why we are so poor in turnover ratio. I watch a lot of other games...defenses that pressure and sack the quarterback are turnover machines because they cause fumbles, cause poor throws for INT's under QB pressure, or if they don't get the INT on one play they cause long yardage on the next play and get the INT. This brand of football wins big at Nebraska and Pelini needs to bring it back.

Our defense today seems too confused and just worried about being in a decent spot. Until we get back to recruiting the top defensive players and playing attacking downhill defense, it will be difficult for us to win the way we all want to win. A lot of our defense changes next year (several of our current starters are graduating seniors). Do we think the next crop is up to the challenge?
