We need more new members/revenue

Eric the Red

Team HuskerBoard
Hello everyone,

Wanted to get some input from everyone for assistance on getting more new members in the board and wrangling those casual visitors.

Since moving to the new server costs have skyrocketed. We purchased the cheapest services available for what our board needed to operate properly. If we go any lower we will have crashes as we saw in the past. We are not in the poor house by any stretch, but we cannot continue down the path we are on. More money going out than coming in.

Anything I can think of isn't going to bring waves of people, I'm just not savvy enough. Couple things I was thinking of:

  1. Let's do our best to make decisions with the mindset, "Will this bring in new members?"......."Is this the best decision for bringing more hits/visits to the board?" Crap like this. Here is an example, go this link/thread that is in the main forum>>>>>>>>http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/65295-husker-camp-countdown-nus-top-50-players-heading-into-2013/ ................. While I totally understand keeping every player under the same thread for organization, neatness and common sense purposes will this bring in new members, new discussion? Each of these players should have it's own thread dedicated to itself. The casual fan is not going to go through pages of a thread to locate a player or make comments. They are going to go to Huskermax where each player is easy to see.
  2. Be sure each thread started has a clear title. I saw a couple of you changing titles so they make it obvious what is being talked about. THANK YOU!!!! Sometimes members want to get slick and think they are being creative. Well casual visitors and fans aren't going to spend time clicking through thread after thread and read through it.

In the end, more members/consistent guest and visitors will equal more revenue through ad sales and purchases through huskernation.

Any thoughts or comments please, please drop them here. Nothing is to obvious, silly, dumb or obnoxious.

Eric, you are trying to kill me with this "every player gets his own thread" stuff. :D I know I'm OCD about threads, but if that's what you want, I'll take my meds and make that happen.

We could solicit articles from the members, and we could "pay" them in +1 fake internet points.

I like the policy of changing thread titles for clarity. I think we should stop putting the note in the OP and just send the member a PM about it, though. Makes it cleaner.

People seem to like to vote on things, and they like "contests" like the one I'm running in the Crib right now. Does anyone else have any ideas for similar votes/polls/brackets, even if they're one-offs?

Well said..agreed. i would continue to post int he thread itself so other members see the note and will do the same when they create a thread. As time goes on, less work for us changing titles, they will initially create it cleaner.

Contests....huh......never would have though of that.

I always wanted to do a contest for best Husker man cave. Allow people to create videos of their cave, post to youtube, link it on hboard and then discuss and vote.

What about creating a newsletter we send out once a month or so, featuring select Husker items? I see it featuring, say, three items - one shirt, one cap, one video and every newsletter also mentions tickets (except during the season when the "regular" newsletter is going out with the ticket info). If possible, even provide a very slight discount - not too much. The idea would be to keep HuskerNation in the forefront of everyone's mind. I think the banners, as good as they are, eventually become something folks overlook - they're just "there". The newsletter is a cheap way to grab mindshare.

  1. +1s = $1 donations
  2. Require credit card on file to post, change company name to something innocuous, charge $20 every once in a while
  3. Scarlet Package PLUS of Donor Team gives you access to view mod forums! Only $250 a year!
  4. Change all prices of HuskerNation.com items for $1, raise shipping rates to $49, make sure the $1 price tag stands out on the site whereas the $49 does not.
  5. Guess knapplc's age thread in contest crib. Every year off = donation.

Just some suggestions.
