Not sure why but today I thought about a time when went for a "promotion" and applied for an asst principal gig a school I was at.
I decided to throw my name in for the opening. If I remember correctly, I was one of only two people in the building who were interested in the position.
I interviewed—twice. I wasn’t selected. I don’t think it had anything to do with my annoying personality or a lack of intelligence, but still, I didn’t get the job. My principal, who conducted the interview, told me I could stop by and ask for feedback on why I wasn’t chosen.
So I did. I went and talked to her about it. She didn’t have any solid reasons. In fact, she mentioned that some of my written responses on the application were too short. She pulled them out—and they weren’t short at all. They were actually very long (which is the complete opposite of most things about me). That’s when I realized she had never seriously considered me for the job and had just put me through the charade of a fake interview.
I left shortly afterward and moved to a new building, where I’m much more respected. So much so that when there's an opening for an administrative role, they respect me enough not to even fake an interview. They just tell me I’m not what they’re looking for.
It feels good to be respected.
Any of you ever get passed over?
