Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini received an 80-percent pay raise in the wake of the Huskers’ strong showing on defense this season, two sources close to the program told the Journal Star on Wednesday.

The 44-year-old Pelini, who doubles as defensive line coach, will make in the vicinity of $375,000 in 2010, up from his salary of $208,360 in 2009. His raise became effective Jan. 1, a source said.

Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, the Huskers’ highest-paid assistant, had a salary of $375,000 in 2009.

It was unclear Wednesday if Nebraska’s other coaches, including head coach Bo Pelini, received raises for 2010.

Carl Pelini this season helped oversee a Nebraska defense that ranks seventh nationally in average yards allowed, allowing 272.0 a game, while leading the nation in average points allowed (10.43).

The Husker defense was 114th nationally in average points allowed in 2007 and 80th in 2008.

In its last two games this season, Nebraska held Texas to 202 total yards and Arizona to 109 in the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl, marking the first time NU has posted a shutout in a bowl game.

Meanwhile, Carl Pelini, in his second season at Nebraska, oversaw a defensive line that featured senior Ndamukong Suh, who finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting, and sophomore Jared Crick, a first-team All-Big 12 choice.

The going rate for coordinators is escalating. For instance, Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops recently was hired at Florida State for a reported $500,000. Oklahoma’s Brent Venables reportedly made $395,000 in 2009.

I'm fairly certain the 80% raise Carl just got, up to 375k a year, will help him push through the negative waves of this.
