Won't Be Around Much

Guys, just to let you know, I won't be around much for the next 18 to 24 months. Long story short, in addition to my other work, I've been added to a workgroup that has to set up electronic health records in the state (actually, every state has to do this).

While I'll try and get on when I can, there will be stretches of days in which I won't be able to. I'm going to concentrate on some of the behind-the-scences stuff like the Prediction Contest, the Schedule/Results page, the Countdown Clock, etc., since I can generally get those done fairly quickly. But what I won't be able to do is read every post in every thread any longer.

I'm sorry about this, but I haven't found a way around it. I know during the season we need as many eyes on the Board as we can get.

Anyway, some thoughts:

If you determine someone needs banned, remember that you can either suspend indefinately or suspend posting indefinately. If you need to know the difference, see THIS POST. You can either post a thread here or email me and I'll do an actual ban when I can get on the Board. My email is fgobell@comcast.net, and I'll probably react sooner to that rather than a topic here, but I'll check here when I can.

This is a suggestion only, but I found it's helpful. When you take an action against a member (warning level increase, suspension), you need to:

1. Send them a PM or email telling them what action you've taken and why. If you are suspending, be sure and send it via email rather than PM - after all, they can't get on the Board to read their PMs.

2. Paste a link to the offending post in the Reason for this warn adjustment. This section must be completed field. That way, we can refer back to exactly what it was if we need to review the person's history. Each post has a post count in the upper right of the post. It reads Post #4 (or whatever the count is). If you click the actual number, a pop-up will appear with the URL that links directly to the post. You can then click and paste it into the Reason for this warn adjustment. This section must be completed. What I usually do is say something like Personal attack on a memeber at post... and then paste in the URL. However, what I prefer doing is to reply to the offending post and quote it, informing the member of the action taken. There are a couple of reasons for doing this. One is that even if the member goes back and edits the post, you still have it as a quote in your post to the member. Another is that it serves as a warning/reminder to the other members. So, what I do is reply and quote, inform the person what the violation was and the action taken, and then when I take an action (increase warning, suspension, ban) I actually use the URL to MY post. Again, this is just a suggestion, but it sure has been handy at times. We recently had someone I banned email us to ask why - months after it had happened and months after I had notified him. I suspect his email had changed. Anyway, I was able to quote him the dates and times of his violations, the nature of the violations, and even post the URLs to my posts quoting his posts (even though he couldn't see them). And if anyone we ever banned years ago should try and get back on, we can evaluate whether they should be allowed to.

Again, sorry about this. I know it's a pain and I wish it wasn't happening.
