With the clusterf#@k of spam being dumped regularly, wouldnt it be easeir to give the mods some ability to ban spammers? Sometimes these idiots are getting moved to the junkyard just to repost some of the same sh#t.

I know that you have to trust that the mods will not abuse this privelage. Beleive me if its not spam, I would leave it to the admins.

We are trusted to keep the order on the board. It just gets frustrating to see these porn/ drug/ idiototic posts slip through the cracks just to resurface.

Just a thought.

 
I feel your frustration but banning is something that only admins can do because it's located in the Admin Control Panel section of the board. There's no way to selectively allow access to it to mods. We try to catch as many of them before they get a chance to post but some inevitably get through. I've already banned 6 new registers today. Just keep moving them to the Junkyard and we'll keep banning them.

Funny that you brought this up, I'm guessing due to Martinqueer's post you just moved to the Junkyard. I actually banned him before I even saw this post or saw that you moved one of his posts to the junkyard. I banned him based on his IP address, Sweden...

 
While I agree it would probably be helpful to be able to selectively assign the ability to ban and to limit mods to banning only for spammers, as Joe pointed out it can't be done that selectively.

Having run a board, one thing to which I can attest is that you don't want too many people being granted Admin rights. Gets messy very fast. While I believe that none of us mods would abuse that, the more Admins the greater the potential problems.

Also, I imgaine the Admins frequently check out the Junkyard for "new posts" - at least, I've operated on that theory; I just move them to the Junkyard and trust that the Admins will ban the "member" who posted the spam.

Good point - but remember, minor gods usually escape with their skin. It's the major gods that seem to get cast aside.

'Sides, I don't want anyone blaming me should all of ETR's posts go missing (not to suggest that would happen, but...).

Best thing about that is that there will be wall to wall bowl games for the next week or so. WOO HOO!

 
Good idea Mike, but yes Joe / Frank are right. Thanks for the help with controlling this sh#t, its been getting thick lately. and as joe said, him & I have been canning an unbelievable amount, most before they ever get a sniff. right around 10-12 a day.

possibly we cn come up with a hack to relegate new members from countreis outside the US to being on some type of probation until we review their posts for the first few. i'm sure slacker will come up with someting. he will, wont he???

There aren't really any mods to take the work out of stopping the spam. We will still have to continue banning the manually and moving their posts to the junkyard. What I can do and will work on tomorrow is updating our ban filter, I have almost 400 entries to add to the filter that should help eliminate some of the spam.

The only other option, which I don't recommend, is that we require Admin approval for new registries. I don't recommend this because when a legit person wants to join the board they're ready to post, if we make them wait they might louse interest and go somewhere else. Plus it would be more work on our parts.

I would just say that Chad and I need to be more vigilant on keeping the ban filter updated. Every time we ban someone with a .du or .ru or .se suffix or contain nude sex girls xxx wet and messy booty free .... we should just go ahead and add that domain to the ban filter...
