QB Coach...???

Right now, I know Tim Beck is labeled as our QB Coach. I don't think all credit should go to him for Martinez's success and the success for these other QB's getting the grip of knowing how to run the offense. I think appreciation should, foremost, go to the players for their dedication, but also to Joe Ganz for what he has done to help shape Martinez. Everytime I see Martinez start to get down, you see Ganz over talking to him, and he comes in with a new found confidence.

I am one, who thinks it would be a great idea to hire Joe Ganz as our official QB coach, and relieve some pressure off of Tim Beck. Your thoughts?

Who would you fire?

Why would you have to fire? There are many programs out there with a QB coach. If I remember right, I believe we had one back when TO was coach in the 90's & its not like the university doesn't have the money to fund another coach to benefit the program.

Because you can only have so many asst coaches, and we're currently maxed out. If you make Ganzy the QB Coach, as an official member of the staff, you have to eliminate someone somewhere.

I was unaware we were maxed out, but I don't think losing Joe Ganz would be good. He has stated he will be leaving once Taylor's senior year is over, and there is a reason Beck has put him in charge of Taylor.

He's said he'll be here at least through the end of Taylor's career. Once that's over, they may make a spot for him. But if he leaves, they'll bring in another GA and we'll be fine.

We can't keep everyone forever, and it may also benefit Ganz to get some experience elsewhere. Staying in the fold here forever isn't always the best idea for your career.

We have two OL coaches.

That said, I don't think there's any rush to promote Ganz while he's doing his GA years. And knapp is right, it may benefit him to soak up some other football environments too. Doug Colman did a GA here I think, and went to Tulane to do just that.

Especially as long as Ganz is winning "significant" sums of money from Bo by wearing those ridiculous pants. In other words Bo is helping offset the fact that as a GA he doesn't make sh!t.

We have two OL coaches because the OL covers about half the offense. I would hope they'd dedicate more manpower to the base of the pyramid.

We have 2 OL coaches because we've needed to address the coaching of that position and it's the best usage of staff positions at this time, I think. You do what you need to do and while the OL covers half the offense for every team in the country, very few find themselves in a situation where they elect to have two OL coaches.

Not that it is a gross waste of assistant coaching positions -- staff seems to be a good, cohesive group as a whole. Young and energetic and on the right track. But if we ever need to add a dedicated position back - TE or QB or wherever, I think it's the OL that gets the trim.

Also, the numbers aren't that exaggerated, I think...

We have 26 OL on the roster.

17 LBs - one coach

19 WRs - one coach.

20 DL - one coach.

25 DBs - one coach. (Heard is listed as IB/CB, and he'd make 26 if counted here. But I think he's just an IB now.)

But, it's not nonsensical from a numbers standpoint because we don't have a "TEs Coach" - TEs being split among the duties between Garrison and Cotton. Or maybe being effectively handled by a GA in Vince Marrow. Speaking of which, Marrow is a guy we've heard a ton about and seems like he would be well above Ganz in line to move up to a fulltime coaching position. If that happens I think it would have to also involve a move back to one OL coach.
