Saturday night I participated in bull-s****ing session in brewery stop surrounded by friendly OU and OkieLite fans. Actually one gal claimed NU fan. One discussion was traveling questions. Myself and other guys have no idea, stumped.

Q1: Charter plane parking in special apron? The main reason was bypass air terminal thus eliminate pain-in-the-a$$ time-consuming check-in procedure.

Q2: One plane?

Q3: Plane seating setup. Economy (unlikely because big players esp. linemen), business or even first-class seating? My brother-in-law who used to be a TWA mechanic employee said he was very easy to change the seating configuration.

Q4: What time departure? Friday early(AM) or late(PM)? One guy said early Saturday if scheduled prime time game.

Q5: How about Iowa City 300 miles away....... Bus or air? Manhattan and Lawrence trips traveled bus route instead of air (I think). My wild guess, Iowa trip is a little bit too long via bus.

I know inside info answers but just wondering......

Lots of idiosyncratic tangents involved in multiple schools difficulties.........

I believe I once read that Okie State has to have one plane carry the equipment and fly to a larger airport to merge with a larger plane carrying the team because the Stillwater airport can't handle the load of both.

 
I'm sure it's changed since the mid 80s but when we went to a couple bowl games, it was a chartered 767. Plenty of room, no security, took coaches(and their fiamilies)/players/trainers/cheerleaders/etc....but not the band.

Maybe it was different cuz of bowl reasons, but it was nice.

One side story--on the flight home from the sugar bowl in 87 one of the planes engines went out. It was apparent cuz a normal 3-4 hour flight was taking like 5 hours. The captain finally announced it and said there were still 3 remaining engines. Only being 10 yes old at the time me and my brother were freaked out. All the players started flashing their overhead lights and call buttons off and on.

I Remember Neil Smith (who was a senior I believe) looking up from his back gammon game and just shaking his head, like, "idiots". I thought, if he's not scared, neither am I.

Was that way in the 90's for bowl games as well, I think they get a bigger travel budget for those. They may have had two planes, but they took their practice officials along as well, so my parent got to go to the '95 Orange Bowl while I had to stay home with my grandparents. Never let them live that one down.

 
My buddy made the trip a couple of weeks ago. We use about four buses for the team, cheerleaders, coaches, athletic staff and selected family. All security is bypassed (have another buddy at airport and he talks about all the coke and pot smuggled into our state by teams) but there are baggage handlers to load etc. but it is a private plane so no TSA or X-ray. The team consumes giant amounts of food when they arrive, when they go to their movie, and around 10 PM their bedtime snack is typically a pound and half cheese steak hoagie with protein shake.

Travel is very well coordinated and the buses have a 3-5 car police escort at all times to navigate any given city. After the game the equipment is loaded onto the semi-truck to be checked in and washed back in Lincoln. Bo will do his after game pressers ... team loads up the buses and typically given a large pizza per person after the game to tide them over on the way to the airport. The plan ride home is protein bars and 32 oz drinks. Buses take everyone back to the stadium and everyone scatters.

I could go on another couple paragraphs but it would be so cool to travel on an away trip just one time
