Morality is being treated as an absolute, when it is anything but absolute. What is immoral to me may not be immoral to you or immoral in the eyes of the law.

Do I think being homosexual affects a person's ability to be an effective Scout leader? From my understanding, sexual preference doesn't hurt effectiveness. A gay Scout leader could be just as good as a straight Scout leader. The only difference between the two is the nature of the role is going to attract fewer gay men. That's not discrimination.

For gays who are wanting to be leaders but are forbidden by the organization, I think that that really sucks for them. But that's their legal case, and if BSA is a NFP, they really don't have a claim.

You're getting bent out of shape because BSA's terms of morality don't align with yours. Neither is right, nor is neither wrong, it just is. You can't go changing everything to suit your needs because then it won't suit other's needs.

And by the way, porn is objectification 100% of the time. The person viewing it may not be doing so with that idea that this is okay in real life, and I would suggest that, of the porn watchers, maybe 5% of them permeate that objectification into their everyday life

Sorry, the way this conversation progress towards the question of gays compared to heteros led me to misunderstand what you were asking. I wasn't trying to make any distinction, but only to simply state that people of all kinds go through life with different pressures and scars that impact them in a number of ways. Sometimes these are easy to spot, most times not. I think we can all agree that people don't choose their sexual orientation, and that it always ends up as a combination of different amounts of genetics and societal conditions in which they are raised.

And Nobody, this is an answer to your latest post as well. Not specifying it just to sexual orientation, but to all things. Alcoholism is a combination of genetic tendencies and upbringing; just as anger, depression, generosity, stubbornness, the ways in which we form our friendships, and any number of other things. Alcoholics don't have deeper issues than non - they only have more visibly apparent ones.

There are a gazillion reasons why someone is gay. Some are just flat out born that way. Some choose to be that way because they are sexually deviant. Some are that way due to sexual or other types of abuse earlier in life (I don't call that choosing to be gay).

I come to this conclusion from many years of being around various gay people as co-workers, friends, employees...etc. and having very frank discussions with them. I had an employee one time tell me that he just always was the way he was. He doesn't ever remember liking girls. I was friends with a lesbian one time who was gay due to a date rape incident when she was a teenager and she just emotionally could never be with a man again.

I get annoyed at the discussion of "why" someone is gay. Everyone wants to pin it down to one reason. It can't be. Everyone wants to paint gay people into one picture. They vary just as much as straight people do.

Another thing that annoys me is when people think that because someone is gay, they are more likely to be a pedophile. What a crock. I guess people don't think about the pedophiles that go after little girls.

Now, BSA should be able to make rules how ever they see fit for their organization. I don't see a big difference between them or a church. A church can make rules excluding gays or women or who ever they so choose can't be clergy in the church. Why can't the BSA?

How a person is raised doesn't seem to be a major factor in why someone is gay. That's what the science tells us.

I agree EXCEPT BSA isn't a Church and BSA isn't offered special protection under the first amendment. Private groups that don't get tax deductable contributions can also excluding gays, blacks, women or whomever they hate or feel are inferior to them.

Again, as has been stated before numerous times through this thread, the BSA can set their membership anyway they want as the law stands today. If you, someone, doesn't like it, complaining to 6 people on Huskerboard will not change what is in place. nor are you going to change the minds or opinions of the people you keep arguing with.

If you have a problem with the BSA, you have basically 3 viable options: 1. Don't buy their popcorn. 2. Don't donate money to their organization, or join your children up or volunteer. 3. Contact someone in elected office and chew their ear off and try to get it changed in anyway you can.
