Mary Weatherholt has a way of making people change their weekend plans.
Playing for a national championship tends to do that.
The Husker senior continued her run through the NCAA women’s singles tennis field with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alabama’s Alexa Guarachi in a semifinal match Sunday played indoors at the University of Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center.
Weatherholt (30-1), ranked No. 11 nationally, will face defending NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in the finals Monday. The No. 13 Gibbs, the 2012 NCAA singles and doubles champion, rolled past Texas’ Breaunna Addison 6-1, 6-1 in her semifinal.
It was Weatherholt’s fifth win in the tournament, and her surge has brought NU head coach Scott Jacobson to the scene. Associate head coach Hayden Perez had handled both Weatherholt and the doubles team of Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova in the individual championships, which began Wednesday, but Jacobson was on hand for the semifinals Sunday.
