The pendulum swings both ways. While SEC teams are playing early-to-mid-September games against other, normally elite conference foes (offenses and defenses not entirely clicking yet), many other conferences use September as a dress rehearsal without having to worry about their conference title hopes being shattered.

This has helped them before because:
a) They play against each other early in the year when their teams aren't beat up and possibly major players missing because of injury.
b) An early loss has tended to mean less than a late loss.
c) Then then have easy games at the end to look really impressive against and heal up before the bowl games....(now play off)
d) When everyone else is playing Joe's College of Nursing, they are playing their main rivals and they get all the hype from ESPN and other networks with game day in town. Late in the year when they are playing JCN, they have had all the hype, they are at the top of the charts and nobody cares that they are playing patsies.

I always wondered why we don't schedule a decent conference game early in the year, say, mid September. If we played Sparty three weeks earlier than it's scheduled for, it would be a HUGE game on the national stage. As it is, on Oct. 4 the NU v. Mich State game will be lost in a mix of a dozen other big games. Also, if we would schedule a patsy in late Oct/early Nov. it would give us an extra week to heal and prepare for another B1G game. In other words, I sorta like the way the SEC schedules their games.
