Hank Hughes

This thread only highlights the fact that Hank Hughes is anything but a weak link. There is a possibility that there are no "weak links" in our coaching chain. At least not yet, without having played one game yet.

While he did do well at UCONN, lets not pretend like the Big East was some offensive juggernaut. The Big East was a bottom of the barrel FBS conference. I'm on the fence until I see how he does with some actual competition.

Just curious about our D-line coach. I know he is perceived to be the weakest link on the staff by many on the board, but we rarely, if ever, see or hear anything related to him. Nothing in the press, on the recruiting trail or even from the players he coaches.

What is the story here?

I'm guessing the story is that he's not twitter-savvy, therefore people think he sucks at recruiting 'cause we aren't kept in the loop.

Yea. Plus UCONN is a recruits #1 destination. All the best players go there.

See how I can spin it the other way too.

This is possible. But even when recruits are getting interviewed and talk about who's recruiting them, I've basically never seen his name come up. Really don't see Banker or Davis come up much either and never Read except with his specialists. I'm sure some guys are our better recruiters than others and that's fine.

Of course, we really don't seem to be in on much for DLine recruits so there just might not be that many recruits to talk to in those positions. Which could be an argument either way.

Hughes, Read, and Banker don't contribute much to recruiting. Hughes was brought here to stop the run and aid Banker. Banker was a loyal coach to HCMR. And Riley firmly believes In a full time special teams coach. Bray and others are our recruiting specialists.

You pretty much summed up what I was thinking about posting. Good job!!! Thumps up!!!

I think this is pretty accurate. I'll give Banker somewhat of a pass as I'm not sure how much coordinators recruit. Langsdorf appears to basically do QBs and that's it. So it's probably not surprising that Banker isn't a big recruiter.

I don't know what to make of Hughes but Davis surprises me a little bit. It also might be that this staff is mainly recruiting their own positions. They said when they started that they would like to recruit mainly their own position but weren't sure that would work given they have to cover the entire country. But it sure seems like that's what they've been doing for the most part. Given that we already have our RB commit for the 2016 class and don't seem to have much traction on the DLine, that could be at least some of why their names don't come up a lot.

I'm not sticking up for Hughes but show me a team that has all 8-9 assistants being good recruiters. I will help you, there isn't any. It is no different from the Pelini, Callahan, Solich or even the Osborne eras. You are not going to have a staff that is 100% or even 80% good at recruiting. I am sure Riley knows this but still hired Hughes because of his knowledge on how to play defense.

Banker is the weak link. Don't like the hire and think we could have done much better. Feels too much like Callahan cosgrove esq. sometimes your good friends just aren't cut out for a big time gig.

They have not coached a game at Nebraska yet, so it is not easy to judge coaching prowess. By the numbers, Reggie Davis or Hank Hughes would be the weak links in recruiting. Luckily, we have Bray and Coach K for that.

What's the obsession with naming a weak link? Get over it. The links in this chain whip the sh#t out of the whole group of weak links in the last staff.
