A lot of us, myself included, liked the Bo Pelini hire, which if you're speaking of Michigan and Ohio State laughing at Riley's resume, then I'm assuming they wouldn't even have looked at Bo Pelini's before he was hired here. I think that's what we in the business here like to call a double standard.

If they were looking for an experienced coach, which we were, then neither Ohio State nor Michigan would have looked at Pelini.......so I'll opt out of your double standard accusation.

Because there weren't very many of them.

Rivals.com national recruiting director Mike Farrell tweeted that the hiring is a "home run."

"I don't think Huskers fans realize what a well-respected game coach Riley is and how hard it is to win in Corvallis," Farrell wrote.

Don't check in that often, but WOW. Same old conversation. Won't complain about that though, SOS on a message board is like finding that water is wet and fire is hot.

I have to agree that it is too early to say much of anything about the current staff, though I have a few observations.

1st about the old staff. I don't think they get enough credit. 9 wins isn't automatic anywhere. If anyplace should have 9 automatically, it would be Meatchickin or that school in Ohio. You can't really argue that the big ten as a whole (or is that "hole") has been that tough, yet neither of those schools had 9 wins every year for the last 7 years. Nor did Wisconsin or MSU (3 years out of last 8 were less than 9). That being said, 9 wins became the mark due to Osborne's tenure. I think a better standard is the fact that he never lost more than 3 games. In that context, with the current schedules, the standard is probably 10 wins. Osborne lost an average of 1.96 games per year. During his first 7 years, he lost an average of 2.5 games per year or 21% or a winning percentage of 79% Pelini lost 29% of his games (not counting his interim game) or a winning percentage of 71%. That really is pretty damn good.

However, in the words of said Hall of fame coach,

It isn’t just a matter of wins and losses; it’s how you do it. If you lose by a field goal and play well, that’s a little bit different than getting blown out three or four times.... It isn’t all about winning and losing. Believe me, I understand that. If you lose a fairly large number of games by a significant margin and you have fairly good players, which I think we do, then I think there are some systemic issues....But there was something wrong, evidently.

We could have done a lot worse than Pelini, however I think it was abundantly clear that there was something wrong and it did not get better. There have also been several "read between the lines" statements by players that make you go, "Hmmm!

Anyway on to the new staff. My initial reaction was WTF. But I have moved beyond that.

Positives:

The transition seems to have been a fairly smooth one for the players. Kudos to both the player leadership and the new staff, cause the players seemed largely behind Pelini and it could have been problematic.

So that is what good tackling looks like.

So far TA looks like he could be good at this throwing the ball stuff (though the first game was a bit streaky).

Although they let Hill break off some long runs due to containment breakdowns, they have generally looked much better against the run.

Have scored on both opening drives and they seem to be doing well at putting TA in a situation where he can be successful.

What happened to all the dropped passes?

It seems like this staff can make adjustments

No whining about "hard to recruit. fan expectation."

The staff seem to conduct business in a professional and adult fashion.

Concerns:

Can they run vs a good defensive front?

Pass rush?

Man coverage on the outside. I am not concerned about the lack of adjusting to help DD out esp. after reading Banker's comment that we could have, but we were ahead and he is going to see that all season long so he has to learn. Also, I liked the explanation that they would prefer for them to have to through to the outside due to it being a lower percentage throw (I assume he means when defended properly) than across the middle.

TA still does some head scratching, WTF, are you channeling your inner Farve moments under pressure.

Caveats: There is not enough data to make an informed decision on the likelihood of either success or failure and that will probably still be true for a year or two. We will need to see a larger sample size on recruiting and on development.

9 wins did not become the "mark" under Osborne. It was a garbage statistic that i believe was brought first in the nbc intro to the 1994 orange bowl (93 season, bob costas "never a season with less than 9 wins"). After that it was just a garbage number no one talked about or cared about until we had issues reaching that number. Had osborne at some point went 8-4, 8 wins would be the number. But heres where its all bullsh#t. Then, 9 wins was a lowly, substanceless stat. It represented failure. A down year. The minimum allowed. Now its spoke of as the benchmark. Like its the goal. Its a load a crap is what it is. It got to the point where the 9 wins were so empty and meaningless but yet the staff appeared to ride into a sunset of complacency and mediocrity. How do i know this? Easy. I watched the games.

Now we do things with the 9 wins in a sick effort to legitimize ourselves in an era of mediocrity, like use it to put ourselves in the same sentence with Bama and oregon, saying things like "well if it was so easy everyone wpuld do it". Id give back all our last 5 seasons of 9 wins to have that last second tick off in dallas in 2009. Same with yhe 29 some game opening win streak. Its just a number. It doesnt legitimize anything.

Not liking the hire is not what annoys most of us, it is not being willing to acknowledge the building pile of evidence that a lot of things happening in the program are better under Riley, from program positivity, to coaching, to gung-ho recruiting. These things can not be denied and if a fan truly wants Nebraska to be better, he has to be willing to acknowledge that this is happening. There are some here and elsewhere that do not want these thing to occur, because it makes the firing of 408 look like a better idea every day that passes.

There is a big difference between, "hey, I wish we would have hired someone else, I don't think this is going to work out" and putting off an attitude where you constantly have to remind everyone the hire sucks, we suck everyone sucks, we are going to fail...bla bla bla....while not ever acknowledging anything that goes well.

And, quite frankly, I would be perfectly happy if the words BOleaver and BOleiver were permanently banned from the site. There are no other words on this board that grate at the other side more and cause more arguments than those. Anyone using them are simply trying to stir the pot and get on other people's nerves.
