What does this picture show from the Nebraska Boy's State High School BB Championships?

Lincoln hosts Boy's State BB championships every year. On March 10th, a player from Winnebago, whose members are largely (maybe totally? Don't know) comprised of Native Americans, tweeted this:

Here's the photo, in case it gets taken down at some point:

It's a conversation, purportedly between the woman on the left side of the above pic, and someone named "Benjamin," during the Winnebago vs. West Holt game. It says:

Woman in White: UNKNOWN

Benjamin: Good

WiW: This gym holds 3200 and its full! WH will lose in front of a big crowd!

Benjamin: Full of prairie niggers?

WiW: Yes, as a matter of fact it is! <emoji>

We can all agree the term "prairie niggers" is objectionable and offensive. That's not up for discussion, really.

What I'm asking is, does anyone know anything about this? It was a thing on twitter the day after the game, and then it just went away.

Does anyone know this woman?

What was the context of this conversation?

Who was this woman there watching?

Was it West Holt?

Was it Winnebago, since she seems happy that West Holt would lose?

Was it some other team?

They moved the Winnebago/West Holt game to a gym all by itself (Lincoln Southeast) apparently anticipating a capacity crowd. Thus, she was noting that the gym would be full and WH is indeed West Holt. The colors on her scarf would be consistent with a West Holt fan but I have no idea if that is correct. I'm not sure if she was happy that they would lose or just assumed West Holt (the #8 seed) would lose to undefeated, #1-seeded and defending C-1 state champion Winnebago and was just saying if they were going to lose, at least it was in front of a large crowd.

Woman is not from WH, and most likely would be happy to see WH lose as shes from a town nearby that has had some animosity towards WH in the past. She(her husband actually) has a business in Atkinson(branch of his main one)and does a fair amount of business with people who are WH grads, have kids at WH, etc. Will be interesting to see the fall out. I know who she is, but am not one to put people on blast on an internet message board.

I agree with you and you are doing the right thing by not putting her on blast.

Couple of things. First, I am not a big fan of public shaming unless I am aware of the full context of the situation. A screenshot of a text conversation paints only a small picture. Even if it is an ugly one.

Second, I am glad this got out so that the public could see just how backwards and ignorant some people can be even in 2016. Winnebago used to be an armpit of a town that people would speed through as fast as they could. Now it is a thriving community that has proper leadership in place that helps the city grow while several of the predominantly white towns around it are seeing declining numbers of residents and jobs.

In a private conversation who cares.

Poor word choice? Yep.

Something the world was suppose to see? No.

I have not problem with people using that language in a private conversation unless it is offensive to the person it's being told to. You all have done the same thing whether joking, or serious. Yet not been caught doing so. If you say you haven't....you are a liar.

"Everyone does it" is a lie people tell themselves to stamp down the hurt they feel when they know they've done something wrong.

Everyone does NOT do this. Everyone is NOT a racist in their hearts. Everyone does NOT casually use the "N" word in conversation, even when they think nobody is looking.

"You have all done the same thing..."

What a crock of crap. Who do you think you're kidding with this?

Man that's bullsh#t.
Granted, I think prying on this person's personal conversation and posting online is kinda bullsh#t, but if you think everyone is like this then maybe it's time to start surrounding yourself with different people.

It's worded inapporpriately but there is am element of truth there.
At one time or another we have all had an inappropriate conversation or said something that would severely offend certain people.

That said, this situation is pretty ugly. The woman and other person clearly have no qualms referring to people of color as the derrogatory term used, that reveals a lot about them and not for the better. They got caught and now will suffer the backlash, rightfully so.
