John Parrella

BONER CITY!!!!! Ive mentioned it, but i believe the D line has to lead the team. The really good teams usually are led and kept in check by the D line. Now of course the D line needs to be good to do this, but i dont think that will be a problem now or in the future and Parella will let them know how its done.

He pointed out Ross Dzuris as being a head turner this year. We saw practice film and it looks as if the Davis twins will be the real deal. I wasn't impressed with McMullen from what I watched on tape.

I really hope they can get the twins to be physically and mentally ready to go every down. IMO, I think this is one area Coach P will succeed from the jump. Getting the guys mentally prepared to play each and every down as nasty as the first snap. I really think that we will also see an increase in physicality in year 2 under Phillips.

 
No doubt we will see a big improvement in the defense this fall, but I really think it's going to be Parella's 2nd or 3rd year when we see the "wow" plays we want to see. It takes kids a few years to get everything down and really blow up the field. We can't expect him to be a magician after only have coached these guys 7mo before the season. It takes a while to break old habits... Wait till last year's class with Neal, and the Davis's are Juniors and then judge Parella.

I am trying to temper my enthusiasm. However, look at what Harbough did in one year at Michigan, with a new system, new kids, staff etc..... It's not inconceivable to believe that he can't make a significant and obvious difference in his first year.

I agree. More excited about the Parrella hire now than ever. His playing time at Nebraska really helps with developing the culture of the D-line...... I see Kevin Maurice making a large step forward in his final year. Bo should have redshirted him but unfortunately he didn't.

Moving McMullen inside is a good idea IMHO. He is too big and too slow at the DE position. Hopefully this move builds depth at DT along with Kevin Williams.

If we can get development at DE , then we could have a good to very good defensive line this year.

Agree. If we get some good DE play, I really think we have the chance to be a very good D and surprise some folks.

 
The idea of McMullen, Maurice and Williams pounding on the interior line early in the game and then bringing in the explosiveness of the Davis twins is exciting.

 
There is a good probability that the returning guys plus the youngsters coming into the rotation will produce just as much in the front line defensively as last year's bunch. Assuming our pass rushers are improved (we didn't really lose much there), then we should be better across the Dline. The linebacker play should be significantly better in my opinion as it improved last year as the season went along. The secondary was shaky last year but now the guys have a year of learning. It WILL be better! There is almost no question on this area in my view.

Therefore, we were in every game for the most part, even though we lost 7, an improved defense should enable us to win several of those close ones.

 
It is great seeing someone bringing the 1990's attitude back to the team. Those Ds were relentless, punishing and never stopped. Perhaps now we will see the real emergence of the Blackshirt D. We've not seen since Suh and Company.

I still am, to a degree. I think the biggest reason for this though is because it's spring. A lot of what we're hearing right now is the sunshine pumping narrative accustomed to dozens of programs throughout the country.

That said, I'm certainly hearing a lot of things I love to hear, particularly the passion he brings to the position. The dude looks like he'd line up without pads and take our offensive line on straight up if he could. Just by my own nature, though, I'll be skeptical until I see what shows up on the field.
