Douschebag Hall of Fame

He's not doing it on a whim, but he is misdirected.

He is as American as it gets alright, and he is exercising his American right to be a douchebag. And he may soon have the right to collect unemployment benefits. Hope he enjoys his gubment cheese.

Fair enough. I just don't see standing or not to the anthem to bring awareness to a topic about the government as douschebaggie.

Nothing wrong with sitting during the anthem to bring awareness to a topic about the government. I didn't realize the government was oppressing people of color. There should be laws against discrimination.

You are absolutely right. Of course, those laws are enforced equally and without bias, so problem solved!

Maybe we should stop playing the National Anthem before every single sporting event. It doesn't have anything to do with sports. Save it for the Olympics or special events or something.

knapplc is a douchebag for continuing this topic here after I created a separate thread for it...

But yeah, I've thought it kind of odd that we still do that for professional sports. Just a carryover of tradition.

For sporting events at high schools and public schools, I think its still okay. Maybe college sports.

But at my place of work, should we start the beginning of each project with the national anthem? Or perhaps when we release a new product to the market?

Should the national anthem be played prior to theatrical or concert performance?

Should the national anthem be played prior to a team of surgeons starting a procedure?

Should it be played each time a new thread is created?

This is a pretty interesting article surrounding the playing of the national anthem during sporting events.

http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/6957582/the-history-national-anthem-sports-espn-magazine

If you don't want to click, at it's core, the Star Spangled Banner is a battle song (and sports are a "battle") that basically taunts someone (in the case of the song, Britain) and then tells them to look at the flag (aka "Scoreboard.")

It also has a lot of history steeped in baseball, and a lot of Americans felt even more tied to the anthem following 9/11 and some of the incredible displays of patriotism that happened at sporting events following those attacks.

In terms of Kaepernick, he has every right to do what he did, just as people have the right to criticize him. While I always stand and honor the flag during the national anthem, I've never walked a day in his shoes and he very well may have legitimate reasons for doing what he did, whether people agree with them or not.

It is humorous to me that many of the people I see outraged about CK on my Facebook/Twitter timelines are the same people who claim the country no longer respects their own religious or 1st Amendment rights.
