They were ready on gameday. They decided to keep a tally so they could crunch the numbers later, but they soon abandoned pencil and paper, bombarded by too many well-wishes and high fives to count. (And the one, count ‘em, one, Husker fan who booed them.)
As they walked from Stadium Drive to Barry’s in their opposing team attire, they were pulled into tailgates and offered food and drinks, lectured on Husker history, quizzed on Duck lore and generally covered in a big red fuzzy blanket of love.
A man dressed as a pirate and handing out red beads produced green necklaces just for them.
A couple at the traditional pregame band parade on the east side of the stadium took them in hand and walked them through.
“They were this darling couple,” Tawnya says. “And she just hijacked us.”

The woman’s husband told them his wife pounces on visiting fans every home game, eager to show off the Nebraska tradition.
Speaking of traditions. “Everyone told us we had to get a Runza,” Jay says. “Over and over and over,” says Tawnya. “And, of course, Valentino’s.”
