What's Behind the Staff Changes

Who it is. When it happened. Why it happened. Interesting to consider.

The big question: Who's driving these changes?

Is it Riley? Is it the Riley Whisperer, executive director of player personnel Billy Devaney? Is it athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who wants to know so badly how the Husker team is doing that he stands among the players — giving them fist bumps, patting helmets — during games? If it is Riley, he'll have to have a compelling answer when he addresses reporters about this. A very compelling answer. You don't just let go of a close friend — after nearly two decades — without concrete reasons. This is uncharted territory for a guy who prides himself on loyalty.

Doesn't matter. Whether this is Riley's decision alone, or he's feeling administrative pressure, either way is good news for the program, and empties most of the ammo out of the belt of the "whoa is us, Mike Riley is too nice, Eichorst is a sniveling pansy, we'll never be good because they don't care enough" crowd.

Worst part about this is gonna be how bad of a hire we go out and get.

I sense there's a collaboration going on in the evaluation process. Riley, Devaney, Eichorst all involved to some degree but ultimately Riley's decision. Just speculation of course.

The three guys that have been fired (Hughes, Banker, Read) have been miserably bad recruiters.
