The People v 84Husker

This place would NOT be a ghost town. Great example of this: Buckeye Planet, where ANY bashing of players, coaches or anything Buckeye earns you a two-week suspension, zero debate. Go over there and try it. Really.

What they have is a thriving community of Ohio State fans, far greater participation than here at HB, and a site where nary a discouraging word is heard about their team.

It absolutely can work. It just takes work.
But it's easy to be all sun shine and rainbows when you've been consistently in the top 10 for a long time, and even when you were down and out it was only a couple years.
I assume criticism is still allowed over there, so what exactly constitutes bashing?

It's just as easy to look at them now with Meyer and pretend it's always been good for the Buckeyes. But we remember Fickell & Joe Bauserman, don't we?

You don't have to b!^@h at your team, coaches or players to be a fan. It's possible, and they've proven it.

Again pooping on someone's sunshine and pissing on their optimism is the greatest thing on this board these days.

How someone allows another's opinion that isn't shared by said poster to get their panties in a massive bunch is quite comical

Oh sure, I memba!
Like I said that was basically a two year deal, and they were right back at it. Take a fanbase here that hasn't competed for a Natty in 15 years, it's a little bit different. I'm not saying it can't be done here too, but I think a little venting about the coaches from time to time is warranted. Would I have been banned for my fo fiddy thread?

Exactly. It was one season with an interim, and it was basically a mulligan because everyone expected Meyer to go to OSU. They've had alot more success to be happy about during the period Nebraska has been irrelevant.

We're pretty strict when it comes to player bashing. On the other hand, coaches have always seemed to be fair game, to a certain degree, as long as I've been here.

On Buckeye Planet's front page, the very first forum is on the Clemson game called "Clemson Autopsy". Here is a post within the forum that clearly attacks Beck, and I bet if I look at more than one of their forums, I will find more of the same.

10000% on Beck/Warriner, and the lack of producing talent on offense. Last year we saw them hinder a team that was probably the best we really ever had with a fantastic line, arguably best OSU rb ever, Michael Thomas etc. This year, they manage to produce nobody on the offensive side of the ball minus Curtis Samuel. Warriner needs to be demoted to OL only, Beck needs to be gone last month. We cannot continue to put up with lack of production and progression like that. Not with these high level rated kids. We aim to be a Bama level elite, and yet Bama had the stones to get rid of their cancerous OC before the NC game, we've put up with it for 2 years.

Clearly "bashing" is open to interpretation. If you think that's proof that you can say what you want on that forum, I invite you to create an account and try.

No. I'm saying it's certainly easier to be positive when you have continual success.

I never said it's ok to be an a$$ to the players. I think player bashing should be pretty much off limits except for valid critcism that aren't personal. If a guy isn't playing well it's going to be talked about, but his intelligence, family, etc. don't need to be brought up.

Coaches are different IMO. They get a nice chunk of change and it's just a part of their job, it always has been. Obviously I'd prefer if everyone gave justification for their criticism and kept it reasonable, but we can't all sit down and write a thesis. Obviously family, friends, children, etc should be off limits too. That being said, I think most of the people who bash the coaches here usually get run off because they don't have much to offer, and over step the line in other places.

I would agree with this. Coaches get paid and thus should expect more stringent criticism. Players should be critiqued for their play on the field, but less so than coaches.

What BS. It's OK to be an asshat to the players and the team because you haven't had the same success as Ohio State?
Who said that it's ok? Because it certainly wasn't me.

We've banned a few people the in the month for bashing players or going overboard on the coaches.

What I was hinting at is that it's easier to be positive when things are going well (aka OSU) vs being an afterthought for 15 years (aka Nebraska).

I'd even argue that things have been much more positive the last year than they were the previous 4.

My mentality has always been that coaches and players are fair game for criticism, i.e. analytical judgement based on stats, overall performances and value in a game. Coaches are open to harsher criticisms because they get paid.

But, I've always drawn the line at name-calling and general foolhardiness, and I think most of our posters are in line with this ideology, as well.
