I like this Billy Devaney guy.

You have to like his can-do mentality. But, c'mon, really, he's seriously not conceding an inch to Ohio State? I mean, the Buckeyes' last five recruiting classes have ranked second, fourth, seventh, third and second.

I like his attitude. I like his passion, direction and vision. I really think that a change in attitude is the single biggest factor that NU can change to make an immediate impact.

I also liked his comment about wining bowl games and conferences will bring guys. Wining cures all. The old adage "the rich get richer" holds true. When faced with offers from "blue blood programs", IMHO, the kids will most likely go with winners. No one likes to lose......

 
I also love the take, but come on, Ohio State beat us by 59 points.

How much of that particular arse whooping was:

talent deficiency

lack of effort, or

lack of depth

is certainly debatable.

However, what is NOT debatable is in big games like that (especially night games on the road) we have got to not only stop getting blown out, but we have to start winning at least half of them consistently.

You didn't mention mind set. We have witnessed under three head coaches now a generation of players that as soon as something starts to go wrong they give up

 
I don't remember Bob or Tom having top ten recruiting classes often, as some keep pointing to about how we can't win if we are not top 5,6,7 in recruiting. They won with coaching up what they had. Lot of Neb walk on kids on those teams, that got a lot of playing time through their time in the program. I don't know if we will ever have that type of coaching staffs again. I would like to see MR put a group of good coaches together, and get the program back up to playing with a chance of playoff potential. Texas is loaded every year and they aren't getting it done. That tells me it's the coaching staff, not the *****.

It also has to do with recruiting "needs" - i have always thought that UT was under pressure to have high ranked classes and would just go after *****'s - not looking at depth issues and player personalities. Some programs that have been more sucessful with less (MSU / Wisc / NU in the 80's 90's) knew they weren't going to pull top 10 classes and had to work harder to make the pieces fit together to make the total package better. Yes that is coaching, however it starts with smart recruiting.

Part of Tom's success was the offense, you could recruit to that specific offense another was continuity. He had assistants for years and years we're on our 4th post TO coaching staff since he left.
