Pinned news source thread in P&R forums

TGHusker is requesting some posts be broken out of a thread about Seth Rich, turned into a new thread for discussing news sources, and then pinned to the top.

He has a point about separating, but since there aren't any other pinned threads in there, wanted to see what all your thoughts are. I've temporarily pinned it for now.

Zoogs or any Moderator- As moderator can you create a new thread with these last several posts - starting wt Knapp's post above about twitter sources and the discussion that follows. Maybe add that one post with the graph that showed the spectrum of left/right, reliable/unreliable sources as the lead post. And then pin it to stay on top of the political forum. This could be a resource thread for all of us. As we find new sites we like we can add to it.

I don't think there would be any problem with splitting them to a new thread. I do that regularly when there is good discussion but not exactly on topic.

As far as pinning them, I guess there wouldn't be any harm in doing it for a bit. But I would say if it's an interesting topic it will stay near the top on its own. If not, it will naturally drop off.

Speaking of that, I've got a question (since I did this movement on the fly and for the first time.)

I started a new thread for this topic, made a post in it and then went to the old thread to move everything over. Once I moved everything over and went back to the new thread, my initial OP had been pushed down and became post #10, while everything I had drug over was now above my OP. Is that normal or did I perhaps do it the wrong way?

 
Agree with you guys re: pinning a thread. While I like the topic, it seems a bit authoritative to have a pinned thread in P&R about where you should be reading news

It's not a bad idea to have this as a resource, provided the OP gets maintained -- but that seems like an unnecessary amount of work.

Yes, posts are always in order of timestamp. When you split off into a new thread, it's best to have yourself be the author (or members will protest, fairly, that they never started such a thread).

knapplc pioneered the way to do this by having a thread full of his posts with old timestamps in one of the test forums. That way, he can move one of those posts into the new thread and edit it as the OP.

You can also always check the "Show 'edit by'" line if you need to insert a note by you in someone else's OP.

Ingenius - I like it.

I'll see if knapplc wants to maintain it, and since I'm in there a lot, I'll keep an eye on it. If it seems to be not worth the trouble (or falling by the wayside) I'll unpin that baby.

I've grabbed an old post of mine to make a new thread a couple times. And that works fine. But I usually just select all (or as many as are on one page) posts that I want to move and do a Split (from the drop-down box at the bottom). Once I have them all moved, I edit whichever post is now the OP and put a note that it was split from "x" thread and check the "edited by" box so my handle shows up. Not that it's a prefect way but I don't think I've ever had anyone complain.

Yup, that's how I handle the preview threads when you have multiple articles/sources being posted, and if someone beats me to the initial post for a given topic.
