Can Grixby Be Successful?

Everyone always says Grixby isn't good because he's 5"9, but when I see NFL games on I notice some of the best corners in the NFL aren't that tall either...

Asante Samuel- 5"10

Lito Sheppard- 5"10

Ronde Barber- 5"10

DeAngelo Hall- 5"10

Dre Bly- 5"9

etc...

hell even the best corner we've had in the last 5 years, Fabian Washington, was 5"10.

So I'm wondering if he could possibly break through with some better Safety play this year. He made some good plays a year ago, first one was his pass deflection against Texas in the endzone guarding Sweed, but he got burnt a lot more than he did good obviously.

He's got a spectacular vertical, good speed, and good athleticism.

I'm going to call Grixby my defensive breakthrough of the year because of his talent and better players around him.

Maybe I'm crazy or just dreaming but I think it's possible he becomes a good corner by seasons end.

Well...I like your enthusiasm.

i think Grixby will be successfull.

what does 5'9 have to do with letting Sweed/Kelly/Jarret running strait past him?? His height wasn't the problem last year, he'll be ok this year though..

No matter what pair of CBs we have on the field, one of them is going to get picked on. When Grix is on the field with Bowman or Jones, the other team is generally going to put their tallest, fastest WR against Grix to create the biggest mismatch. That said, Grixby sure has a set of springs in his legs with a 40 inch vertical leap.

YES! Another Grixby thread. I was hoping there would be one today. I mean we haven't spoke of this in a good day or so.

I wish him success, but I have my doubts. I have said it before, that his height is a factor, but not the only factor. Yes it is possible to be an effective DB and be shorter, but it will always be difficult to go up against a taller WR, for WRs can jump as well (see Purify). It can, and has been done though. IMO, I think that Grixby's problem has never been atheletic abililty (he has a lot), it is his instincts or lack there of. He often seems to be just out of position. By this I mean that he is easily juked, playing to far off (could be what he was told to do?), or many times simply throwing his arms in the air as a last resort. To simply put it, I do not think his height is his biggest downfall.

Agree 100%, I've always thought Grixby just doesn't have the instincts to be a very good CB. You can get away with it in high school and against inferior college WR's, but at this level he'll always be a step behind. I hope he proves me wrong or better yet I hope ZB comes back and he doesn't get a chance to.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. If safety play improves even the slightest, which it will, the corners will be able to play with soooo much more confidence!! As a corner you not only need excellent playmaking abilities, but also the confidence that even if you screw up, someone (Safety) will be there to have your back. I've said this before in another thread, but Shanle was by far the worst safety I have ever seen, EVER!! He missed tackles, got outran, and constantly left the corners out on an island. Some corners thrive on man to man, but ours do NOT!! I wish I could say they have lockdown abilities, but it just isn't there. Maybe Bowman, but definitely not Jones or Grixby!! These guys need to feel confident that the safeties will cover there 6 and with Asante, Wilson, Green or Thenarse on the field I'm sure they'll feel a lot more comfortable.

I think he has a chance to step up and be better. I wrote off Booker when he was young in his career. Then came the Florida game, and he played the best I had ever seen of him. He went on to have a very good career here. All the younger DB's when forced to play as freshman and sophomores struggled a bit primarily due to the opposing teams singling them out in isolation plays. He could emerge as a star. It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

well, if USC's Patrick Turner lines up against Grix, he will just get toasted! he may fare better against other receivers, we shall see.
