Then Diaco called from UConn. He wanted Verducci as his offensive coordinator. Verducci had known Diaco since the latter was 11 years old. Verducci took the job. His first season, 2015, went OK. UConn made a bowl game.
But 2016, Diaco’s last at UConn, was an unmitigated disaster of pontificating press conferences and poor coaching decisions that Diaco duplicated in his one year at Nebraska. It was a sour note for Diaco and Verducci’s relationship. Diaco demoted Verducci from the OC role with three games left, promoting a coach who’d never called a play in FBS. Diaco predicted that that coach would be an “icon.”
UConn was immediately shut out twice in a row and scored just 13 points in its final three games. Diaco was eventually fired.
