Pronunciation of words by Nebraskans

My current boss, the most intelligent person I've ever met, says sickth.  Caught me off guard the first time, and then I heard at least one other person say it that way, too.

So is my family or town the only ones who say groshery?

On Wash/Washington, we helped my mom unlearn that about 20 years ago, and now she has ZERO recollection of ever having said "Warshington." She flat out denies that she ever did it. Alzheimers does run in the females in her family but she should be about 15 years away from that...

Also, does anyone else know people who refer to boxelder bugs as Democrats?

And this isn't a regional thing, I don't think, but in one of Ed Sheeran's songs he pronounces "sixth" --> sickth

Groshery is pretty common around here.

I know a lot of people I was around used to say Warsh/Warshington but I don't notice it as much anymore.  Maybe I'm just used to it.

My wife's family calls them Democrats.  Or at least her dad does.

I've heard commercials from 2 different grocery stores and they have both made me wonder whether I pronounce "grocery" a Nebraska way, or if I just randomly pronounce it the way I do. And in my opinion, the way I pronounce it is the un-snooty way.

My way (and the Nebraska way?): Groshery, Grosheries

Snooty way (in the commercials): Grossery, Grosseries

If my way is the Nebraska way I think these grocery stores need to make different commercials for our area.

What are some other examples and how do you say them?

accuracy - accYuracy or Ackeracy ? (I was watching a football game)

vase - vozz or vace ?

comfortable - comfterble or com-fort-a-ble ?

I pronounce it...

  • ac-cure-assy
  • com-fort-able
  • grow-sher-ies

Others...

I say pop, not soda (okay, that's the only one I could think of off the top of my head)

OMG, who do you know that says that?  My husband and his parents both say it that way.  Just figured it was only a family thing.

I do.

So is my family or town the only ones who say groshery?

That's how I pronounce it.

caramel or carmel- I guess caramel is correct but I say carmel.

I pronounce it "car-mle" without the middle 'a'

"Grosh-ry"

Hebron = Hee-bruhn (instead of Heh-bruhn)

Pretty neer = pertineer.  (You might not hear this back in Lincoln and Omaha.  I think it's a rural central and western Nebraska thing. lol)

Kearney = Car-knee (Non-Nebraskans often say Keeer-knee.)

I live in Lincoln, and I hear/say "pertneer" pretty frequently.

Anyone ever heard the word "spinort" to describe someone who's well-dressed?

This is a good one. I know quite a few people from Beatrice and they get driven nuts by anyone who pronounces it 'bee-uh-triss.'
Yep i've heard that too,  but that may be the only place that word is pronounced that way.

The food company that was founded there pronounces it Beeuhtriss foods in their commercials.

When its used as a female name its Beeuhtriss

I knew someone who lived around Beatrice California and that how they pronounced it too
