Maurice Washington Faces Charges

Back to Maurice, it's not that I don't think he should be punished, it is just complicated. First, I don't think he should catch a felony and be a registered sex offender over this. Misdeminor, sure. Pay a fine, take some classes, serve probation or whatever. That seems appropriate. As far as suspension and stuff goes, it would make things a heck of alot easier if the courts could just make a decision on this. That is what its all based on. I wish we could sit him in the non con and call it good. That would be appropriate in my view, but my worry is if dates get pushed and he gets convicted down the line if people will have amnesia that he sat already. The timing of everything complicates what should be pretty straightforward.

The charges are a little odd and may fall into a legal gray area so the courts need to figure out what Mo is guilty of.  As of now, the coaches can't determine what Mo is guilty of so I think he plays.  It would be ridiculous to suspend him until the court makes a decision because the legal process could drag out to next year. The punishment should be contiguous and based on what the court convicts him on.  Unfortunately, that could be toward the end of the season when we need him most.  By not suspending him now we're potentially hurting ourselves but it seems like the right thing to do in this case.

We lived in Utah for 10 years. It’s been a pretty darn good series for years and I had no idea until we lived out there. Every game seems to have some crazy storyline too. I wish they still played every year.

What I've seen is they may be waiting to see if they hear anything from the university.

In a perfect world that sounds great but there are 2 problems I see with that. A. If he is convicted later, how will 'he already was punished for that' play? Not well imo, though it could be navigated. But the more important point is B. which is what happens if the charges get dropped completely? I guess a few games in exchange for better optics isn't a terrible trade off but its unfair to Mo. And honestly I'm not convinced the optics are that bad on this.

The team and university don't have to meet the burden of reasonable doubt that criminal prosecution does. Look at the parallels between what Mo did and what Avery Moss did.

K, good. And I agree even if he’s found innocent they might still have reason to punish him depending on the details.

Thanks. I guess if any there's anything new it will come out today. Just seems strange to me that they wouldn't already have the necessary information  at this point to make a decision.

The university has a lot of flexibility in either saying that he's already he punished by the university which is separate from the criminal proceedings or they can give him additional punishments and say that they learned more about what happened during the trial.
