Anyone for PS3

I heard a complaint from one of the guys at work about the frame rate??? 360 just gained 10 to 15%. <_<
yeah, it's mostly a complaint coming from the gamers who like the sports genre...particularly Madden '08 which runs at 60fps for the 360 and 30fps for the PS3. Of course on a standard def TV are you going to be able to tell the difference? Probably not. And you probably won't be able to even on an HDTV unless you place the 360 and PS3 side by side for a comparison.

I will say, however, that there is a rather big concern about the 360 and it's power supply/fan issues. I don't know how later versions are running right now, but mine and several others get hot...fast. Not only that but the drives are incredibly loud. My computer here and at work run quieter. I don't know how in the world that slipped past the guys at Microsoft. Apparently MS just offered an extension of warranty because of so many problems with the units over heating or something?
My first PS2 had alot of problems and eventually fried, but I bought the extended warranty like I always do and got one of the latter models and I haven't had any problems with it. Hopefully microsoft addressed that issue by now with the 360.

I too have heard about overheating issues with the PS3. But the simple solution to both is to set it up in a WELL VENTALATED spot, where it can have plenty of air. I don't know about the 360, but on PS3 they make a cooling fan attachment that goes on the side of the PS3. Makes it look kind of bulky but I heard it works pretty good. I don't have one so I can't solidify that statement.

Anyways...for those who want to play online....."Huskers20" is my screen name.

I am a level 1 on NCAA 08 and I played against a level 5 last night. Pretty TIGHT game up until the pick that I threw in the 4th Qtr. in the end zone that would have put me ahead by 3. Needless to say it was ran all the way back for a TD. He was playing as USC and I was of course BIG RED!

yeah, I have yet to see a game on PS3 that has made me want to buy it. I'm a first person shooter fan though...and I feel like role playing and sports games are the big draws of PS3.

PS3 definitely hasn't been able to keep up with the 360 though...particularly in graphics, I think. I also think what they set the frame rate of the PS3 at was causing some concerns for hard core gamers.

The graphics argument is BS. Anything on both platforms is about a dead heat. Sure gears looks great, but lets see what comes out 18months after the PS3 launch.

The games argument for the 360 is 3 games. Gears of War, Bioshock and Halo 3. And with the rumor mill running of Bioshock coming to PS3 next year, it gets thiner. Over the next year, the game argument should swing tot he PS3, Sony owns better IPs. The Next gen games based there just have not hit yet.

For the frame rate issues, that is really just EA. EA is as lazy as they come, and would rather put out a bad product on one system than put a little more time into development. And I will stay as far away from EA as I can, but that is another thread.

Thanks for the info. I went to Best Buy today and looked at the 360 and the PS3. Man the PS3 is so much more money.

I don't know about PS3 but the 360 comes with a 1 year factory warranty.

it may be only three...but that's some pretty serious games. All three probably rank as the top 3 games out right now (I haven't played Bioshock, but it looks cool). PS3 is just behind. They kept delaying their release of the hardware, they're more expensive and now I have yet to see any games that really peak my interest. And until MGS comes out, I'm not sure I there will be any that I can't get on the 360. Heck, I'd even prefer to get a Wii now. Everyone loves those things.

But of course I've never owned a PS unit....so I don't have the loyalty that a lot of other PS fans do. I've just played them with friends. Never liked the controller either, I guess.

Look at the fine details before the too much money thing pops up. 360 price points are $279, $349 and $449. The PS3 have $499 and $599, with a soon to be added $399.

The cheap 360 does not include a hard drive, which may be an issue as MS has given the greenlight to have games made that require a HD, meaning you can actually have 360 games that YOUR 360 cant play. the others are a 20 gig and 120 gig. The only difference between the PS3 hardware in the packages is the HD size, with 60, 80 and 40 gigs, respectivly. The $599 also gomes with a game.

The PS3 has wireless internet conectivity out of the box standard, the 360, if you want wireless, pony up another $99. PS3 has next gen video(Blu-ray) playback. For the 360 to run HD-DVD content, you need to pony up yet another $179.

And again. The all about shooters, 2 games. Halo 3 and Gears of war. And the Halo 3 single player game is a one sitting event. The only lasting value of it is if you are a huge on line player vs player fan.

Also, if you want all the 360 has to offer, you have to pay MS another $50 a year for the premium online services, like on line play.

lol, this has gotten us into a console war.

graphics arguments aside....yes the 360 is the cheaper bet (even if you pay the $449 for the larger hard drive...you won't need to if you're not an avid gamer really. I have yet to max my 20GB out. Yes, it's got a bunch of extras that you'll have to pay for. I personally have no need for wireless connection and won't buy an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player until the format war has been fought.

Online content is a big thing with the Xbox. I don't know how PS3 works with it all, but downloading demo games is pretty damn nice on the 360. Also being able to download movies and TV shows. And if I wasn't a cheapskate I'd get the Xbox live so I could play multiplayer.

The 360 has a bunch more than just two first person shooter games. Especially if you go back and get the original Xbox games...there's a crap load. Black still looks next-gen on the 360 and I love putting that in from time to time and cranking up the surround sound. Halo 3 and Gears of War are just the two biggest ones everyone is talking about. And probably will be talking about for the next year or so. Thos are pretty big games if you are a shooter fan (although technically Gears isn't a first person shooter). The Halo trilogy actually has really revolutionized the way first person shooters are made. Online play has become HUGE since Halo 2 (and actually you can play free if you get the right software). Not to mention this new Forge idea they've come up with where you can change the multiplayer map around as you play...basically letting you decide how the map looks, where guns are, etc.

PS3 and the 360 both have their plus sides. Also for me, I really can't stand the PS3 controller. Especially since I like FPS games. The PS3's trigger never felt like a real trigger. They just felt like regular buttons and didn't have that curl around your finger to it. Imagine, BRI if your personal guns (I'm assuming you have them since you're a cop, lol) had triggers that were just a straight line up and down....it would really feel weird shooting them wouldn't it? I don't know, maybe it's just me. I say go find some buddies who have the consoles and give them a run through. Also look at the games both offer...and look at their trailers/gameplay online to see which seems more appealing. 'Cause it's the games that really matter.

Thanks for the info strigori and benny. :thumbs Probably what I will end up doing is playing someones console and seeing what the difference is and deciding from there. The wireless internet thing for PS3 is nice as I have wireless throughout my house and I would love to play some people on-line seeing as I have no life and no friends!

online playing is fun...but be careful. There are some crazy hardcore gamers out there (most of them 13 year old boys that swear like a sailor). First time I played Halo 2 online I thought I knew my stuff because I had beaten the game several times and could beat my buddies...yeah, I realized quickly I sucked compared to some people out there. haha

But you'll become a better gamer, fast.

good luck! :woo

btw, does PS3 have a free online play? or at least a third party software that allows people to connect for free? I know the original Xbox had a couple programs out there that allowed you to fake the system into thinking you were playing a LAN party.

Well BRI, whenever you decide let us know. And if you happen to pick PS3 then PM me your screen name so I can add you as a buddy. So when do you plan on deciding?
