most kids who CAN play, will... at some point or other at the school they got recruited by. May take 1 or 3 yrs.But he gets playing time and that is part of his life experience.
I think people are missing the reason for the portal. It’s not for LSU to get a Burrow, it’s for Burrow to find LSU or anywhere else he can compete for a job. I actually think it punishes(not right word) successful programs from stock piling and burying recruits.
it’s called development, or used to be called that.
now, with the damn “portal” it’s...”I’m not playing or happy so I’ll just leave”. Which is actually great for the kid sometimes. But imagine if a player who is a solid 3 or low 4 star player sticks it out for the extra year it takes them to develop and really shines for 2 years maybe 3.
not NFL type talent, but really makes a name for themselves at their first school.
we always talk about consistency in coaching staff but what about a kid leaving and having to re-emerge into another program? That didn’t recruit them or want to invest in them from the get go?
I think most portal players would fair better if they stick it out. Most, not all. I can give literally a dozen examples of guys who left D1 programs cuz they weren’t getting what they wanted and ended up at my D2 school (some did very well). Most of those guys talked about that they still thought they were going pro, got a bad shake, were better than they thought, Pissed at the world cuz they didn’t get a good look D1 etc etc.
They finished strong at D2 and always felt robbed. Whereas, if they stayed D1 they woulda def seen a lot of time there, playing in front of 50-80k and many more perks, bowl games, tv...better overall experience, but it woulda taken 1-1.5 more years.
most guys are NOT going pro, that’s the thing that gets me. Know your lane and have the best experience you can in it. Instead of transferring and most often setting yourself back.
and don’t forget, coaching circles are very small and very tight knit. You don’t think the team that picks up Delancey is going to call Frost? He may speak well of him, but he’s gonna give em the context of his situation as well. Grass isn’t always greener is what I’m saying I guess.
