I understand the sentiment, but there's a giant hole in this notion.  Again, it depends where the measurements take place.  Here, on HuskerBoard, where Conservatives generally get stereotypes into loony bin escapee territory, sure.  The silence when the chips fall after a dog pile, yeah the theobbing boner session is glorious.  In another arena where well spoken and intelligent Trump voters (yes they actually do exist) outnumber the Biden voter I've found the Boner party is had by the other camp, but the discussions aren't nearly as violent.

I say this as someone who votes non-partisan, just my observations as someone disgusted by political tribalism.

I measure dicks the way I measure political parties: from the base.

And are you honestly going to say with a straight face that the GOP were/are the only one's POLITICIZING MASKS AND VACCINATIONS?
I feel like my take on this all along has been fairly accurate (and, perhaps unsurprisingly, correct).

-> Republican leaders (led by the president) downplayed the value of masks and other COVID protocols, while routinely downplaying the virus itself

-> Democratic leaders acted in turn by planting their flag in opposite sands... at times overhyping COVID protocols and shaming those who didn't align lock step

There was never a need to politicize COVID and vaccinations like climate change, but here we are. I think Republicans are objectively at fault for fostering the current environment. Are Democrats guiltless? No. But, Republicans handed them this treat on a silver platter. Not even losing an election has helped them see the error in their ways.

-> Masks are not the deterrent people believe they are.  Most Americans probably still think the paper mask will prevent contracting Covid alone, or at least as many that think it does nothing which isn't true either.  But the mask by itself is not as preventative as people want it to be, it just isn't.  And the case numbers, if you trust those, verify that.  The GOP should've played along regardless of their beliefs, same with Mail in Voting.  Hurt them in long run.

-> Double Mask, Triple Mask, Gloves, and other false security blanket ideas playing into fear.  The Dems are just as good at fear mongering, actually better in a lot of instances.  We are seeing it now with the standard expected mutation of Covid, but we slapped a scary new name on it and now we're going to freak out forever I guess.  We knew in March of 2020 that any vaccine developed wouldn't prevent new mutated strains, yet here we are losing our minds over it.  The tribalism over masks and vax is scary.

Politicization of this whole pandemic has been utterly devastating for our country, not just because of lives lost but because of the further division it instilled.  Downplaying it was just as dangerous as turning people into shut in Karen's.  All in the name of what?  An election.  f#&%ing disgusting.

This should really be in the actual Covid thread in P&R...more people need to read it

Masks and vaccines are exactly what they were described to be;  an effective but imperfect deterrent to a global crises that is still evolving.  Both have proven themselves in numerous ways around the world and throughout history, so anecdotal evidence of their failure by people who hate the inconvenience is false equivalency at its finest.

I'm honestly not sure how much we're supposed to freak out about COVID. So far I'd say the response is pretty appropriate. In10 months, COVID went from virtually non-existent to the #3 killer in America. Half a million dead in 10 months, possibly quite a bit more. Exponentially more than the "it's no worse than the flu" crowd was arguing, and is currently ignoring.  This was all happening in virtually every country on Earth, with unanimous agreement it was a pretty big thing. There was a lot of sacrificing and cleverness to keep the economy running as well as possible, while our best minds search for a vaccine. Remember that?  We should be proud. We should also be 98% vaccinated. Jesus f#&%ing Christ.

And yeah....there's a political component. That's why you saw Sean Hannity and Mitch McConnell plead for their audience to get vaccinated last week: those maskless unvaccinated numbers are killing red state voters.  I mean, if you have to pick tribes..........

The reason this is in the Woodshed and not P&R is so we can call the people parroting this horses#!t cruel and hurtful names.

But I'm not going to do that, amigo, no matter how much you suck.

They are effective, except when they aren't.  Not exactly a false equivalency.  Gloves were a failure.  Lockfown was mostly a failure.  Labeling people "Essential" was a failure.

People aren't freaking out because of a virus.  People are freaking out to the narrative they choose to believe.  I know people, major germaphobes who are adamant against wearing masks.  People with no issues taking shots who've become antivaxxers.  It's little to do with data and numbers, and more to do with response, political bulls#!t and the media.  Get vaxxed if it makes you feel better.  It won't prevent you from spreading it.  It will hopefully prevent you from getting it, and if you want to die because "DON'T TREAD ON ME" then that too is your right.  Well it was, by the end of the year maybe not.  But let's not pretend like everyone can and should get vaxxed with a drug still in its infancy during a mutating pandemic.  Most can and should, but not all, JFC.

Glossing over the politics would be a massive disservice when considering anything Covid related.  And I'd think many would be stoked about the idea red state voters are keeling over.

Call me what you like Amigo, not hurting my feelings.  I prefer honesty about this whole thing.  Yet some preach assumptions and place blame like it's a religion.  I'm not interested in that.

Forget the politics of it all. Common sense and an IQ above severely mentally challenged is all it takes to determine you need to get vaccinated. Anybody who is able and hasn’t yet is a f#cking moron that is endangering not only themselves but others and the economy. Anybody who is choosing to forego getting vaccinated is a dangerous idiot and a selfish prick.

As far as masks, distancing etc., the same goes for those people. Claiming masks are not 100% effective as some sort of excuse only exhibits how little a person really understands about this pandemic. Masks are not and were not intended to absolutely prevent catching Covid. The purpose was to slow the spread and limit it to where our healthcare system could keep up. That’s it. Arguing against their use is just asinine and more signs of being a dangerous idiot. f#&%, when will some people pull their head out of their a$$? Get the vaccine, quit wearing a mask and hopefully the dumber mfers that wouldn’t do either one will die before this thing mutates beyond vax control. Its no hair off your a$$, just f#&%ing do it and quit worrying about the GD politics of it.

It's impossible to ignore the politics of Covid, and nobody should.  Everyone should see the whole thing with a clean conscious.

And I would say the danger is for one's self not really for anyone else if they have yet to get vaxxed.  You can spread it if you're vaxxed in some cases, you can contract it if your vaxxed in rarer cases.  So you're really only endangering yourself catching it.  Or are we not listening to THOSE stats?  This is why I can't ignore the politics, statistics.  Data gets manipulated to push narratives and fear monger.  I find it sad and gross.

And we're getting back to the point where even those vaxxed are encouraged to wear masks still, because why?  Because they can still pass it on to someone else.  So effectiveness or not, this is our future until the mutation gets manageable or the politics subside, maybe both.

Edit- I'm sorry, but "Ignore the details and do everything the government tells you to do" is not a smart way to live life but I'm not one to judge either.  I'd take the Blue pill too if Morpheus offered that or the Red.

It shouldn’t be a debate. It’s so obvious people should just do it. This shouldn’t even need to be discussed. I could give a f#&% what Trump or Biden or Hannity or CNN or anybody else has to say about it. The science is clear. People who are vaccinated right now are not dying and not being hospitalized. 99.5% of those statistics belong to the unvaccinated. Story over. Case closed. IDGAF about the political aspects.

To be clear, I’m not going back to masking and we absolutely cannot go back into lockdowns. The only reason those things are even a possibility at this point is because a bunch of mouthbreathers won’t follow the scientific consensus. I don’t care if I can carry the virus and give it to someone else. Ya know why? Because anybody who could get it from me hasn’t done what it is clear they should do. So f#&% em.

And for the ultra sensitive, Im sorry if you, your child under 12 or someone you know is unable to get vaccinated. Protect yourself and Ill be hoping for the best for you. But this economy can’t take any more lock downs and people who are vaxxed shouldn’t have to wear a mask to protect idiots who are making poor choices because of….reasons and excuses.
