My worst fear is that this is some kind of catalyst to push him back in office and spark off the fascist take over. It really feels that way looking back through the lens of history.

"He got shot in the ear that's a close call for a false flag" people get 'shot' in movies all the time and blood comes out but no real rounds were fired. To say it's not possible is honestly dumb to me. I'd say it's more likely that it was a legitimate assassination attempt but false flag cannot be ruled out at this point in time. There isn't enough information.

I mean it’s not good either way but I’m trying to figure out how the current situation isn’t the actual worst case.

Well, Trump was going to win the White House prior to today. Now his odds are just in "guarantee" territory. 

As far as fascism? Doubtful. It's more likely they slowly erode the administrative state, institute unpopular social policies, leading to electoral backlash in the midterms in 2026.

That is all well and good, but good luck getting Trump out after that. Finding votes is what Merica does best in north and South American elections.
