** 2024 Opponent Preview : Iowa (Game 12) **

This will totally disappear during thanksgiving, but I have a new found respect for Kirk.  He does things his way and he wins enough to get away with that. Even after all this heat he's taken he's still going to roll out a crappy offense, win a bunch of games and do it exactly how the man wants to run his program.  The defense is going to be awesome and somehow it never causes a locker room problem that they carry the team while offense craps itself over and over again.

I agree. People were mad sick about Nebraska doing things the way we did them for 20+ years. Winning games, being ranked, getting to bowls, losing big games, not being able to “win the big one”.

Iowa, hate them.  But be honest for a minute, they have been successful under him and have have nice moments as a program. Turned several layers into NFL players and make winning seasons. It’s just true.
They have been consistent under Kirk and have at least shown up.  Now it’s our turn to shut them the F up and reassert our dominance over them.

I want to beat the s#!t out of Iowa w something on the line and I hope N can start using them like the little bastards  they are. Until then, I give them the little tiny props they deserve.

Several years ago a reporter tried to start something between our offense and defense by asking a question at the postgame press conference.  Iowa had just lost a game something like 7-6 and our star defender was asked if he was pissed about the score.  His response?  Absolutely infuriated.  The offense put 6 points on the board and that should have been enough for us to win but we went and gave up a touchdown.  He was legitimately mad at himself and the defense for giving up a touchdown after the offense gave them "two scores" to work with.  Their attitude is just different.

Good lord that is lame.

Can we stop with the "Iowa is just like the 85 bears" stuff?

When you play teams in the bottom half of every offensive ranking for 7-10 of your games each year, your defense will seem good.

Iowa right now is basically 2012-2014 Neb, but with infinitely more national respect for some reason.

When Iowa goes 10-4, loses a B1G title and loses a bowl game and gets 2 guys drafted, the CFB world loses their minds and goes “Hey that’s a tough, solid program!”

When Neb does that, we get ridiculed to oblivion.

"They are a developmental program!"

You mean it took them 4-5 years to get a player to be average enough that he could start for a program that over the last 20+ years has averaged 7 wins?  Wow.  f#&%ing amazing!  Ha

Sheesh - just throwing what I find to be a funny thing out in response to someone bringing up locker room drama and why it doesn't exist and Teach goes off (and can't even do proper math apparently).

The notion of locker room drama because the offense hasn’t been pulling their weight is a very fair thought. Frankly I have no idea how there hasn’t been staff drama at Iowa. Imagine being one of the best Defensive or ST Coordinators in CFB and you’ve got Baby Huey holding you back because daddy gave him a big boy job he’s not qualified for. Imagine being on the cusp of a Conference Title and/or playoff berth, but your head coach refuses to act in the best interest of the program to get them there… for some reason.

The anecdote about the offense giving “two scores” for a total of 6 points and how it’s up to the defense to not allow a touchdown is cute and all for an article quote. But if it’s a real quote from a real loss, then I take it less as an example of some amazing culture, and more emblematic of a very warped culture where accountability is a one way street and where a head coach’s pride is more important than the team. To me it means Iowa wins games despite their culture, not because of it.

imagine how embarrassed that dorky "top defender" was after saying that and then heading back to his apt/house with his teammates.

Did the reporter as the guys on offense "Hey, are you made that you gave the team TWO scores and the defense cost you the game??"

Great point. Does that mindset apply both ways? I have a difficult time thinking it does.

I played on a team that won 3 games in a season in college.  We won 2 of those games by the defense scoring more than the opposing offense.  We also lost a game were we shutout the opposing offense.  There wasn't locker room drama but you can rest assured we on defense were pissed.  It sucks to be constantly put in bad situations as a defense and it wears on you.

You don’t say…

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that your offensive coordinator wasn’t a nepo hire?

I have coached defense where our defense was awesome and the offense was horrible and it pissed me off.

Our staff were grown a$$ men and we still would b!^@h and moan about "the other side" and I am sure there were a lot of other seasons where the guys on offense were pissed at me and how my defense was doing.
