What did we learn Illinois edition

Turns out Big Ten refs just suck and everyone knows it. It’s felt different ever since Scott Frost opened his mouth at the beginning of his tenure. Last night was the reoccurring nightmare of a combo of an insane amount of things going wrong (ST, Penalties, Drops, Injuries) and going against us (Refs). The bright side is 75 percent of the time we probably win that game by 10 or more against a team who is ranked. Limit our bs to a handful and we can beat most teams in the country with a Freshman QB. Sucks to probably be out of the playoff running with one of the easier schedules in a while already, but a Bowl game will mean so much. Hope we have 20 million lined up for this next transfer/recruiting class to fill all the holes leaving.

Hope the coaches zero in and polish up some of the rough spots around Raiola's game thus far... Not trying to critique the guy, he throws such a beautiful and effortless ball and his touch/zip he's displayed is top 1% of freshman QBs to ever play.

However, the play Klatt referenced above that "could've" been the game winner- was a pass he air mailed and his leaning back and not setting proper foundation probably played a huge role in him missing a pretty basic pass.  I love the way he ad libs but if you go back there are quite a few instances where he doesn't sling it for a 5-7 yard quick pick up and holds it looking for an option further down the field.  Probably by design by the coaching staff as they've been pretty open stating their offensive philosophy of wanting to push the ball downfield but there might be a better balance to be had by taking those quick throws early to help open things up.

He's probably the best QB we'll ever have in this progrum but still a bunch for this staff to hopefully build on to make him even more elite. Perhaps that play would've turned out differently if we didnt design it for our slowest TE on the field... prolly by design to catch them offguard but something tells me Fidone or Nelson coming down with that grab

Maybe the refs don't call these to so we don't catch on to their conspiracy against Nebraska.

After a day to get somewhat over the disappointment I rewatched some of the game.

Major concern - there appears to be a disconnect between the def. coaches.  Several broken coverages & players barking at each other on the sideline at the end of the game.

The fat man is a good coach.  He found our weakness on def. (LBs).  On several 3rd down plays, we had no def in the middle field for 10 to 15 yards.

Finally, I think the offense will continue to grow & get better.  In my opinion, def appears to be more about coaching than players.  Hopefully this can get fixed, fast!

Our secondary playing 5 yards off guys needs to stop.  We didn't pressure the qb, we played soft as hell coverage often allowing illinois to complete an easy pass and we're not even within 3 yards to make a tackle and they were running right through our front 7.  That's a horrendous recipe for a defense.

Really souring on hartzog, in the first month this year the guy has gotten burned on multiple occassions and committed bad penalties in key situations, typical "leader" behavior we've seen the past 7 years here

This is basically where I’m at.

The D needs to do something different.  I’m not saying this because of a loss.  The scheme was semi exposed against lesser teams.  White had needs to develop some tactics to get aggressive and not rely solely on 4 guys getting to QB.  They can’t give so much cushion in coverage either.  It won’t work going forward.

Never heard about the d coaches barking at each other but it makes perfect sense.  Ty gave an interview and the defense was baffled in the 2nd half with the different tempo stuff and were trying to figure it out among themselves on the field. And my thought was where the eff are the coaches.

rather than sell out the kids, I think this one is squarely on the coaches. And I haven’t even started to process that embarrassing OT series.

And I read SLH’s post wrong. It was the d players barking at each other.  Same is true tho- we’re the eff were the coaches? I think Ty was throwing shade at them

That was like watching an MMA match the was a 10 sec knock out.  It looked like our D wasn't even set up on their series and like the O wanted no more of the Illinois D.  Never seen a faster more epic collapse in an OT.  No fight or desire on our part. Embarrassing is a great adjective to use there.  Or pitiful.

I believe it’s been 8 years since we’ve scored a td in ot?

I don’t think I’m going to ever watch it again. I think the whole game was disaster on and off the field and everyone was ready to be done with it.  Should have never been in OT to begin with.

this is so on the coaches. This is the effin BIG-you don’t show up without a plan to adjust. I feel horrible for the players-their coaches really left them high and dry.
