What is Iran's endgame?

Clearly the destruction of Israel. Although as much as Israel hates and mistrusts Iran, it's hard to imagine Israel posing a threat to a sovereign Iran and its people. 

Maybe Iran just wants to be treated as the defacto power of the Mideast. Although they have historically identified as Persians, with little affinity for the regional Arab nations, many of whom hate and mistrust Iran as much or more than Israel. 

Also worth noting that Iran is run by an ideological/theocratic minority that does not reflect its young, educated and Western-leaning population.

The end game is to increase their influence and destabilize western and Israeli influence.

Well yeah, but that's the process not the endgame. Do they seriously want the destruction of Isreal and an Iran-backed political (terrorist) franchise in each Mideast country? 

Or is it eternal bluster, designed to ensure they're respected as the Big Dog in the region, whether they act or not? 

Yesterday's ineffectual attack came nearly a year after Iran promised major reprisals. 

So you're probably right. The status quo is the endgame.

They don't have an end game. They can't with the way they've been cut off from the west. They will never over run Israel, so they will just be a thorn until there is regime change in Iran.

Your last paragraph is very important. The majority of Iranian population (especially the youth) want to be more open and like the west. It’s the religious ruling minority that is the issue.  I’ve been hearing that for the last 30+ years. We have to continue to Forster that while fighting against the religious leadership of the country. 
 

Problem is, the leaders of Iran have the best of both worlds. They lead a fairly wealthy country and support all the problem terrorist groups in other countries while not putting their own population at risk. 
 

And no, I’m not supporting attacking Iran and taking them out. The change has to come from within their country. Wow, if that would happen and then we could support that effort, gain a good relationship with the new government and at the same time fostering a relationship with an Israel without Netanyahu or anyone like him…..that would go a long ways to improvement. 
 

But, Iranians have to do the dirty work themselves.
