the silver lining

I argue that the Iowa coaches did nothing to suggest that they caused the win.

I disagree. They win like this a lot and have for a long time. They are boring as hell, but they don't make mistakes. And it's not because Iowa recruits a bunch of Rhodes scholars and we recruit a bunch of morons. They coach players to not f#&% up.

Precisely.  Apparently this is a foreign concept in Lincoln for 10yrs.

They were definitely more sound in ST. They made their kicks including a clutch game winner, punted well, snapped well, returned the ball.  Our ST stats have been documented on this site, we’re terrible.  It’s a glaring weakness and cost us the game.  It helped us beat Wisconsin with their guy missing kicks.  Iowa had no issues, we did and lost because of it.

They also chip away.  They were winning field position nearly the entire game.  Some of that was our special teams, but a lot of it was Iowa’s conservative style.

Exactly, good coaches teach situational football so your players know how to react in those moments.

I can agree with the development that Iowa has had and their teams know how to take advantage when another team screws up. We've struggled with that for years. In game coaching, I was very unimpressed by Iowa's coaches/players. Save for the key TD, our defense was exceptional and Iowa had no answers.

Simply incorrect. They had five first downs and 164 total yards (72 on one play) with zero third down conversions. Outside of their TD, they did zilch offensively.

What does this have to do with field position?  I’ll answer it….nothing.

Look at where they started drives vs where we did.  They chip away waiting for you to make a mistake.  Which we did.

I want to watch Indiana.  I’m curious if he can hold it together after not bringing in your James Madison team.  You can only do that once.  Something similar is going on with Drake basketball.  Drake is basically last years Northwest Missouri State D2 natty team.

I wonder if the future is stealing FCS and smaller FBS school kids and moving from high school recruiting.
It totally is, why recruit HS kids?  Unless they are studs and can play right away.  You are better off getting guys that have 2-3 years in a college program.

That is not a game plan.  They don't go into the game with the game plan of being horrible on offense and hoping for a mistake by the other team and possibly a bad call here and there by the refs.

They got lucky, it happens, it is not a game plan though, it is not how they hope to do things.

It is like saying their plan was for NU to eat up 5 minutes to start the second half and their plan was then for NU to miss a FG that had no pressure on it at all.

I originally started this saying they “won field position”.

Im just going to stick with that because it’s morphing into other things.

Unfortunately it’s not a game plan for any other team unless they are playing NU.  Then that game plans works to perfection most years :)

I know no one wants to hear it, but the stat for missing practices because of the lack of bowl games over the years is staggering.  100-110 practices over the past 7 years.  That's like 5-6 years of no spring practice, and we wonder why we can't do those "little things" right.

Those are practices that the young guys learn how to play special teams, they learn the "little things" that keep biting us in the butt, and after awhile those things start to go away.

Let's hope that with the ~15 or so practices they get this year that is some of the focus.
