Who's Leaving? 2024/25 version

I hear and read people say these players intending to enter the portal aren't necessarily gone, but I assume they quit practicing with the team.  Is that correct?  If that is the case, I see no path back if I'm a coach, or a teammate.

All I know is that the team is under no obligation to let them remain or return once they’ve entered the portal. I suppose at that point it depends on what terms they left and if the coaches want them at that point. I agree that it would be difficult to welcome them back but I suppose there could be some exceptions.

As far as practicing with the team, I’d guess they cannot and would not if they’re in the portal. Why waste coaching and reps with a guy who is out the door?

That doesn’t move the needle much for me. Obviously EJ was not happy with Satt. I would guess most offense players who are not getting all the reps they want are unhappy with their position coach and/or the OC. And it’s also obvious that Holgorsen valued him higher since his usage increased the last few games. And we’re all aware that Satt is/was more of a liability than an asset. None of this is news and a 3rd/4th hand accounting of the situation via hearsay doesn’t really shed any additional light imo. He’ll either leave or DH will talk him into staying.

This is the new standard in CFB. Players don’t have any team allegiance and we don’t owe them any. He’ll either stay, leave or return…next man up. And imo, pretty much anybody on a 6-6 team stands a better than average chance of being replaced by somebody better. He may have been the best RB we had but that isn’t saying a whole lot.

Not going to claim I know all the rules about transfers, but the only way I could see someone entering the portal and staying is if they are still practicing with the team.  Can't pull a stunt like that just to test the waters when there is a bowl game to prepare for.

Yeah I agree, but I don’t see how they can practice with the team if they’re in the portal. And further, even if they could, I don’t see why the team/coach would allow them to. Why waste 1 more minute on a guy that may be gone.

I don’t know the rules either but I picture the portal as a hallway between a bunch of rooms (teams). If you’re in the portal, you aren’t in the room (on the team).

Last year(or two) we had someone entered the portal and then removed themselves. Probably due to lack of interested or lack of a better spot. Can’t remember who it was.  Has not been an issue for us since the portal became a thing, but maybe one could get some hints from other messages board from a this time last year?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the portal officially opens until Dec 9.  Which is why I asked the question.  Because I can't imagine said players involved in team activities, but I don't know that to be a fact.  Same with players who have announced their intentions since bowl practices began.  Did they quit after participating in a various number of practices or just postpone their intentions to enter?  I get its moot, but it would probably speak to their why's a little.  Further, if multiple players have participated in practices and then have been quitting every so often, that has to temper the mood around the building I would think???

Walk-ons starting to make announcements about leaving.  Conversations have been happening.  Anyone who wants to keep playing football probably needs to be in the portal Monday.

I get that, but bowling has not been an issue for Nebraska since the portal became a thing.  The point I was trying to make was it seems to me that it is a hell of a lot easier to enter the portal and remain when there is no bowl game/practices-a lot less explaining to do.

Noted, it doesn't move YOUR needle... bottom line, many think EJ probably should have had more touches through the year and Satterfield most likely had something to do with it..

Just for discussion, would it be better for bowl/playoff teams to have the portal open after all games are finished and keep the February signing data as the only date?  It doesn’t make sense how it is now. I’m sure playoff teams might have scholarship players in the portal too.

Um, ok.
