Kuli & Compton Decommit

Guys, these kids had long term relationship building with the previous staff, and the same goes with coaches from opposing schools. You have to expect we would lose a number of recruits when this new coaching staff has had only two weeks to relationship build verses opposing coaches who have had perhaps a two-year history with the recruits. Don't kid yourself. Our new staff is at a great disadvantage. There are exceptions of course, but these kids -- the ones who are decommiting -- generally feel more comfortable with the coaches they know the best. They just don't know our coaches enough.

As for Kuli, he probably would have decommited no matter who the coaching staff is here. Remember, even if Callahan was still here and had a successful season, four or five commitments would not come here anyway.
I think it is ridiculous. The offense is going to remain the same, for the most part and the defense can only be upgraded. I find it ridiculous that these kids have 0 commitment to the university and are tied to a coach. I guess that is just how it is now.

Really I think it is simple --- kids want to win. If they have choices (in that multiple programs have given them offers) they will choose far more often than not that program that they feel has the best chance of winning (and, at the same time, where they also feel comfortable with the coaches --- those they will work with and for each day). Right now there are many, many programs that have better prospectus for winning than does NU. So, most will opt elsewhere. Until we win some this will not change. Losing teams tend to get recruits who were overlooked elsewhere. NU is a losing team. The new staff will have to take what they can and hope to do something with it.

Kuli and others had better options. More power to them.

If all it is is just winning then how can a program like Notre Dame be pulling in some very nice recruits? You can't say they were better than us this year :P That's just 1 example I'm sure there are others, of schools performing at fairly low levels but still manage to get some good recruits.

It is not only winning. But it is overwhelmingly winning. If you have a mega coach (or one that is perceived to be a mega-coach) a team can compensate and still recruit (for a time). ND has a mega coach (real or perceived, I'm not sure). We do not. ND has many proven assistant coaches. We do not.

And for what it is worth, if we played the ND schedule, we would have had just as bad a record (or worse). Also, I would be surprised if ND did not have more talent (perhaps substantially) than does NU.

HuskerPharaoh, I was just using Kuli as an example. If everything was fine with the football program, and Callahan was still here, you would expect at least four or five commitments to end up elsewhere. Look what happened last year. No, we wouldn't have so many decommiting if everything was fine, but we would still lose some. I'm just saying Kuli might be one of those who would had gone elsewhere regardless of the situation.

As far as the commitments waiting until they talked to the new coach, perhaps they waited because Dr. Tom asked them to? I still think it came down to these recruits being more comfortable with opposing coaches who they have had long term relationships with. So I will stick with that until I hear something different. Also is the possiblility that Pelini and company were not impressed with a few of the commitments during the visits and decided they wouldn't fit at NU -- but this perhaps is not as likely as what I previouisly wrote.

Our recruiting is starting to look more like KSU's everyday. Very sad. I hate to even visit recruiting sites everyday to find out who else is jumping ship.
