I think the author meant that Green's hype overshadowed Martinez's. As in Green was a more heralded recruit.

His point was that Green overshadowed Martinez as a QB in the '09 recruiting class, which is completely true. I was tipped off to his meaning by the fact that he wrote: "Martinez was still an obscure "athlete" who had been vastly overshadowed by Cody Green in the 'Huskers' 2009 recruiting class."
