Competiveness and Statistics?

Article about Gilmore saying that he looks for recievers to step it up next season with Paul and McNeill gone.

Couldn't agree more with Gilmore that recievers do need to step it up. Aside from Kinnie, who else has been a good reciever (not a TE) that we could throw to that is coming back next year? I can think of a few from 2009 but saw very limited playing time this year, Gilleylen and Cooper. Its their time to shine, but if they can't step it up, we need to look at Kenny Bell and Quincy Enunwa who saw playing time this year. We have been hearing good things about Bapiste, but not all of his talents have come together and he still needs to learn the offense.

But my point of this thread is when Gilmore says he doesn't pay attention to the stats. That really irks me, how can you preach competiveness without knowing what your recievers stats are? Does he even know how many times the ball was caught for a TD this year? How about how many catches the team has as a whole? But i won't just lay it on Gilmore, it seems much of the coaching staff at Nebraska doesn't care about statistics or records. I can see how records can lead to arrogance and cockiness. But statistics should be an important part of teaching the young players if you want them to go out and compete to be the best and play the best. They need to know where they stand and how much more improvement one must make to be the best.

I hear coaches say they don't care about stats or records, and then i watch the recruitment video and it feels like there is a contradition there.

Stats don't matter much to players who don't get a legit chance to prove their worth. Aside from Kinnie, McNeil and Paul, who's gotten by far the most second chances in his career, there really has not been any worthwhile PT for the guys we'll be depending on come 2011.

Coach Gilmore is saying what needs to be said. However, I do not think he's going to be around long enough to see this through. If he's our WR coach next year I'll eat my hat.

I wish I did. Just speculation, and a guess about which way the wind is blowing.

I will be surprised if there isn't a change in the coaching staff coming up, and I don't mean just a new LB coach.

This is what Gilmore should have said.

"I'm not a very good WR coach. I play favorites with WR, and I play the guys I know the best. I'm not going to put a guy in just because he's better. That guy will also have a hard time getting better because I'm not going to coach any WR's up that I won't play. Now, looking back on it, I suck! I am a sucky WR coach!"

And it is now a very large, pointy hat, so that will take a lot of eating. I agree. It is no more or no less than what needs to be said. And not a big surprise that such a piece comes from HuskerExtra. I can't find fault with the article but it is rather fluff.

Gilmore wants his receivers to step up?

I want him to step down.
Very nice.

I like how Gilmore is challenging Kinnie specifically to step up his game now that Niles and McNeill are gone, and then he's informed by the journalist that Kinnie was his most productive receiver this year. He did a pretty good job of scrambling to cover his tracks after that, though.

Wow, seriously, what an out-of-touch twit. I'd be cheesed off if I were Kinnie, Bo, or Watson that the WR coach doesn't even know who is leading the team in those somewhat important stats. Not asking him to judge only by stats, but he doesn't even KNOW!

I don't have words for that. CLearly he has his favorites that are based on something other than production.
