CFL Roundtable: Nebraska

why would we get any love?

i've been saying the same thing... crick, david, dennard.
Those 3 guys played a total of 6 quarters of ball together last season. Losing David is going to be a big piece to replace but losing Crick is virtually meaningless. We already adjusted to not having him last year.

Yep if anything the D-Line should take a step forward next season compared to last season considering the only major loss didn't suit up the last 2/3 of the season.

Losing David is a bomb. Have to hope some young more athletic guys step up, if Compton and Fisher see the field together too much the LBers will be way too slow to handle the likes of D-Rob and Miller.

I actually think the D-Backs may be the strongest part of the defense. Green made huge strides late last season, Stafford should understand his job much better and not be out of position as much. Osborne or Smith will be a huge athletic upgrade over Cassidy. And I really think Mo is the real deal.

All in all I expect a better defensive performance this season. :koolaid2:

They should have just renamed that segment on Nebraska "The Bash Taylor Matinez Segment." It would have been more appropriately named.
Half the threads on this board come September could be named the same thing. What do you expect them to say?
Areed... And until we win something of significance with him at QB we all feel the same deep down.
Ask yourself this. If Taylor was a 68% passer with 30 tds and 8 ints with the same mechanics and we still go 10-3 or 9-4, would we still b!^@h about him?
You bet your life. It wouldn't make one iota of difference.

I also don't think we'd be griping about Taylor's throwing motion if the Husker defense hadn't completely evaporated, giving the offense virtually no margin of error and/or forcing them in catch-up mode.

That's the number one question mark next season. The D was visibly and statistically awful last year, and have lost their best players.

But I think the defense will rally next year. Based on no real evidence. Just the hunch that Pelini knows he can't let it happen again.

100 agree. NU's 2009 or 2010's defense could very well have made a big difference. "Also" if our stone handed wrs ever learn to catch the ball might help (Swift/Peterson.......where are you?).

If the defense is not better this season than it was in 2011, I will be extremely disappointed.

Me too but I think we'll do just fine. The current Debbie Downer mantra of "Crick/Fonzy/David" is just stupid. Crick essentially didn't play completely healthy all year long & Fonzy for way less than half the year. So really we only have to replace "one" great player.

I think Bo can hack that no sweat.

Yeah, and the replacements were ineffective.

So tell me, who are we going to count on? I know you don't like to count chickens before they hatch, especially ones who haven't seen the college football playing field before. So you will have to explain this confidence in our group of CBs.

You will be extremely disappointed then.

Well gee, zoogies......we're talking college football, right?

"Everybody" has to replace seniors that graduated. Duh. You with me? Crick & Fonzy can't play for us anymore but as they were hurt and didn't play, played sparingly and frequently not 100% (due to injuries). Also adding that they missed lots of playing time last year it shouldn't take a biblical miracle to replace them without disastrous results. At all.

Again, there's a HUGE difference between replacing a fully healthy 2010 Prince & a 2011 hobbled Fonzy. Or a healthy 2009 Suh & a hobbled 2011 Crick.

We're replacing "one" great player that played great for us last year. Another upside is that due to injuries we had to play other players that gives us even more experience this year. I'll be very surprised if Bo can't hack this scenario.

Our secondary was pretty bad without Fonzie last year.

So, yes - it wouldn't be too difficult to get back to that. Do we want to?

Let's not pretend he was hobbled all year, either. He wasn't. He came back and he played great. If you don't think his production at the end of last year is going to be difficult to replace, then please tell who you think is going to do it!

The way I see it, Green looks like he could be a starter, but unless he takes his game up another notch, he's still a few steps behind Prince. And now there's a spot that's opened up on the other side, you must not be worried about it because of the play of Antonio Bell and Ciante Evans last year?

There is really no other way to put it except that Fonzie is a big loss. Whoever gets that job has really big shoes to fill. No amount of optimism should prevent you from seeing that!
