I didn't really read the report, but I wonder if the NCAA can step into this? And then I realized the NCAA has no idea what they're doing, so I stopped wondering.
foppa, i mostly blame the ncaa for this. they lost control long ago with the money grabs and the notion of "student-athlete" met its obsolescence long ago. this was bound to happen when you have networks worth millions of dollars dedicated mostly to college football.
that's likely what could happen, or you'll see a breakaway of the big universities to form their own "athletic corporation" or whatever...at which time you end up with some form of a minor-league NFL/NBA with the only players benefiting being mens football and basketball.
people bemoaning this have to see that this is a symptom of the problem and not the problem. college athletics have gotten out of hand and no one is steering the ship. they just ignore issues until they come to a head.
@StPaul: Probably not, but since I was never a scholarship athlete, can't say I would know for sure. However, I was referring more to 'normal' students that attend and use them that might make it a federal issue.
I guess my point was, where does it stop? Say I'm a non-athlete getting a partial academic scholarship. Am I now a 'part-time employee' of the University that entitles payment? This is just getting weird.
No doubt CFB is a huge industry, but how much does the nameless Disney animator earn for Frozen? We're going down the road of salaries & commercials, but no scholarships. And the salaries won't be that much. Market forces.
Basically, I think the top stratosphere of "college" "student athletes" will make it big, at the expense of everybody else, in ways probably harmful to their entire institution.
