I'll be That Guy: USC is my favorite show on 1620. Neither Peterson nor Bishop are anywhere near as insufferable as Benning can be. I haven't listened to S&B on the regular since they tried peddling that "Moos is a drunk" narrative last year.
I'll be curious to see what happens but assume like other posters that he'll be switching back to 1620 which is fine by me. I liked Severe's show but it's odd because I didn't really listen to it because of Severe. I was more interested in his guest lineup as it was a good chance to glean some more insight from the OWH writers like Sam and Dirk. Plus Severe always had Warren Sharp on (who is awesome) and I really like the stock market guy he had on too. I'm more partial to a one host show with the occasional sidekick because I feel like the show stays tighter that way versus a two host setup where you need one guy to be really talented and the other guy needs to be good too otherwise the show sucks.
I usually only listen to the Omaha radio guys during football season, and even then I only listen to segments which interest me. Those guys have local radio gigs because they can typically talk Husker football August-February and during Spring practice. The non-football times have to be tough for those guys to fill 3-4 hours of a talk show. I don't know what Benning and Sharpe said about Moos and his drinking, but Moos does seem like the type of guy who enjoys a few cold ones (which I don't see any issue with).
I'm listening to Severe's comments from his show this morning. It sounds like Severe is driving this decision by leaving for another opportunity. He's probably leaving for 1620, but my guess is that he was looking to leave due budgetary issues with the OWH.
Severe will continue to be around (probably at 1620).... As for Josh, he's not necessarily my kind of host, but he is very, very good at radio. Indisputable.
Edit: Also, no two people agree on ANYTHING like @Cdog923 and I agree on Damon.
I haven't seen it mentioned much on here, but I think Verz is doing a pretty good job filling in for Bahe.
@B.B. Hemingway Part of me wonders if Sharp got tired of Benning, but part of me also wonders if Severe wanted that morning slot and Sharp agreed to move?
@teachercd The sad thing is, is that the 2-6 show (talking about sandwiches) will be the more entertaining show.
I worked at 1620 a few moons back, about the time Kugler left. I will say this: Damon Benning was one of the nicest people to me there. I produced the very first year of Big Red Overreaction and he was always very nice. One of the main reasons I tried for the job was because Josh Peterson pushed me into it(Which i really appreciate that he did that). The only person at the station who I would say wasnt my favorite was Mike'l. He big-timmed me and when the microphone turned off, he seemed to be a bit more of an introvert. I had very little dealings with him, so I could have misread it.
That all being said, I dont like the Mike'l/Damon match up... They are too much alike in the sense they are your analyst not your host. Sharp was a good mix with Damon.
@Minnesota_husker thanks for the insight into the Omaha radio biz. I like following sports media, just because it interests me. I don't mind it when sports guys talk about entertainment and pop culture, because it can get old talking nothing about sports and making up opinions on stupid topics. I listen to 1310 The Ticket out of Dallas almost every day because their shows do a great job of blending sports, entertainment, music, pop culture, and a lot of other topics. They have loyal listeners (P1's) all across the country. I haven't lived in the DFW area for more than 10 years, but I still listen to that radio station via their app.
