CollegeFootballNews: Iowa Schedule Breakdown & Predictions
Best Case Scenario
10-2: The Hawkeyes roll through the first part of the season with a big early Big Ten win at Minnesota and with a win over Iowa State to start 4-0, and they get up to 5-0 with a good win over Michigan State. They split on the road at Ohio State and Penn State, and take care of the back half of the slate with five straight wins including home victories over Nebraska and Wisconsin.
Worst Case Scenario
6-6: They struggle early. They lose at home to a plucky Iowa State squad, and drop the fight against Michigan State. They lose all three road games to Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State, and whiff on the home games against Nebraska and Wisconsin. Realistically, they’re going to be good enough to avoid a losing season, but they need to fight in November just to get to six wins.

CBSSports: No. 19 Iowa faces tough road while replacing its star quarterback
Iowa had five players taken in the 2020 NFL Draft, the most since 2012. So the Hawkeyes have plenty to replace. But one thing never changes: the consistency of coach Kirk Ferentz. Entering his 22nd year, Ferentz is the longest tenured head coach at the FBS level. It's an era that remains highlighted by the early plateau of Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2004. More recently, the program has become associated with strong finishes. Iowa is coming off a third straight bowl victory, which capped its first 10-win season since 2015. Now the question is if the Hawkeyes can reload quickly enough to do it again. The last time the program won 10 or more games in consecutive seasons was 2003 and 2004.

Athlon: #24 Iowa Preview & Prediction
Kirk Ferentz will be 65 years old by the start of the 2020 season, but much like his team, he shows no signs of slowing down. Iowa just finished a five-year stretch with 47 victories, including a 10–3 record last season. It was the sixth double-digit win season under Ferentz, and many of the key players from that team return, including sophomore running back Tyler Goodson, senior All-Big Ten left tackle Alaric Jackson, senior defensive end Chauncey Golston, senior receivers Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Brandon Smith and senior All-America kicker Keith Duncan. The losses are significant, too, with three-year starting quarterback Nate Stanley having graduated, and with offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, defensive end A.J. Epenesa and defensive back Geno Stone all having declared for the 2020 NFL Draft as juniors. But Ferentz is getting used to replacing early departures, and the last five seasons have shown that his program reloads more than it rebuilds at this stage.

The Athletic: While fostering change in its football culture, Iowa sustains on-field stability
Few coaches are more uncomfortable bragging about themselves than Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, who regularly musters up a self-deprecating quip when the rhetoric shifts from positive to hyperbolic. Yet three weeks after the Hawkeyes completed a 49-26 romp of USC in the Holiday Bowl, Ferentz wanted to flex and rightly so. Iowa finished 10-3 overall and No. 15 in both national polls. The Hawkeyes’ losses were by a combined 14 points to three top-20 opponents. About 12 inches and an inadvertent moving screen set by a game umpire on a 2-point try prevented Iowa from matching Wisconsin in the final two minutes in a 24-22 loss. Still, five consecutive wins against rivals Iowa State, Minnesota and Nebraska and Iowa’s sixth top-15 ranking under Ferentz was something for the program to celebrate.
“If you look back the last two years, we’ve had two pretty good seasons,” he said. “Ten wins is really hard to accomplish; nine-win seasons, I’d say the same thing. But any loss that we incurred, basically went right down to the last possession. So, we’ve given ourselves a chance to be successful. We haven’t always come out on top, but we’ve given ourselves a chance to be successful. If you’re going to win football games, you can’t lose them. So, it starts there.”
