CollegeFootballNews: Purdue Schedule Breakdown & Predictions

Best Case Scenario

8-4: The Boilermakers show up large in Lincoln to kick off the season with a win over Nebraska. They take out two of 2019’s Group fo Five stars in Memphis and Air Force at home, and they show just enough pop to get by Boston College and Illinois on the road for a 6-0 start. They miss three of the big boys from the East – Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State – but they don’t get by Michigan on the road in October. However, they split the back-to-back dates against Minnesota and Wisconsin, and split the final two games against Iowa and at Indiana.

Worst Case Scenario

3-9: Nothing goes right. They lose to the Huskers on the road to kick things off, and they can’t handle Memphis and Air Force teams that keep it all rolling after last year. Throw in a road loss at Boston College, and the 0-4 start is a killer. They’ll win a few games in the second half of the season, but the run of three road games four weeks before hosing Wisconsin and Iowa are too much to overcome.

The Athletic: Purdue’s road to Big Ten West threat could come down to luck and line play

In three years under head coach Jeff Brohm, Purdue football has been known for two things: an explosive offense featuring some of the best young playmakers in the country, and an unfortunate number of injuries to the quarterbacks piloting that offense. Last year, the injury bug extended beyond the pocket, cutting down stud wide receiver Rondale Moore, who was coming off a 2018 season that earned him freshman All-America honors and the Paul Hornung Award for the nation’s most versatile player. Even David Bell, the receiver who broke out in Moore’s absence, dealt with injuries throughout the season; the two were never 100 percent healthy at the same time. An offseason of recovery should lead to a full arsenal when Week 1 arrives. The quarterback, however, is a giant question mark.

Athlon: #49 Purdue Preview & Prediction

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm remains one of the brightest offensive minds in college football. Yet the Boilermakers took a step back in 2019 because of a string of devastating injuries to key players and a porous defense that ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten in most statistical categories. In his fourth year, Brohm is eager to show that last year’s 4–8 campaign was an aberration. Overall, Purdue has gone 6–12 since its 2018 upset of No. 2 Ohio State, the high point of the Brohm era in West Lafayette. There is reason for optimism, as several underclassmen stepped into prominent roles last season due to injuries and gained valuable experience. Those players will need to continue to develop for Purdue to make progress in an improving Big Ten West.

More to come...

They will be breaking-in a totally new defensive scheme that day, should be able to move the ball all over them. Trouble is they've shown the ability to move the ball all over us. Hopefully home-field and hopefully improved ST's can be the difference.

Rondale rightfully gets a lot of attention but David Bell is really good too.

I think we should win because their defense is terrible and probably won't immediately be better, but those 2 scare me for sure. I think we've actually done a pretty good job on them individually, but we haven't played both at once and let others beat us. 2018 Moore had a decent but not incredible game, but they ran all over us. Last year Bell didn't do a ton, but we couldn't stop their backup QB and TE. I'm less confident we can keep both of them down.

Wow that's a tough non-conference schedule.

Memphis

Air Force

@ BC?

BC isn't very good and Purdue should win that game. But going from an insanely explosive Memphis offense that does it primarily through the air to a triple option team the following week is a rough transition. I'd say they probably lose to Memphis and beat Air Force and BC to go 2-1 but they're not doing themselves any favors with that schedule.

Circa Sports line: Nebraska -4, total points 73.5

The word: Judging by the second half of Nebraska's schedule, which might be the nation's toughest over the final five weeks of the season, September will be crucial toward bowl eligibility for Scott Frost and Co. He was included in CBS Sports' hot-seat coaches list this week and faces a pivotal campaign in terms of extending his tenure in Lincoln. This contest features two of the Big Ten's best offensive playmakers — Huskers quarterback Adrian Martinez and Purdue wideout Rondale Moore — and should be evenly-matched.

It's laughable some media outlets would put Frost on the hot seat after year 2. Shows a lack of pulse/knowledge of the rebuild and workings of the current AD administration.
The whole being 3-9 in one score games really has pushed people into, "Nebraska sure is angry with the lack of success from Frost".
