2024 NCAA Tournament Final Four - Huskers vs Penn State

The ref blew the play dead because they felt a Nebraska player touched the net. Cook challenged the play, and Nebraska did not touch the net. PSU did not have the opportunity to return the blocked ball since it was blown dead, so the point was replayed and no point was awarded to either team.
That would make some sense.

There should be some room for discretion on the point in that rule. Like in football when they rule a runner down before fumbling and replay shows a fumble, as long as there is a clear recovery it can be overturned. The ball was down, no one had a shot at it. But the way the rule is, they unfortunately got it right.
Or, have the refs not blow the whistle on a play like that until the play is done....give the point to PSU for NE being in the net.  Then, if we want to challenge it, then it can be challenged and they don't end up with this problem.

I agree the refs blew this situation.  There was another situation where it appeared that PSU hit the ball 4 times and the Nebraska players look surprised that it was not called.

Penn St started getting points when they discovered the middle of the floor was pretty open most of the time after the first 2 sets.  Once they got the power hits to fall, our girls played out of position a lot where they could just dink it over into the middle of the floor and no one was there for an easy point(middle d fell back to the line almost).  I was hoping they'd not drop back so far after the 3rd set but they kept leaving that middle spot open and got dinked there for at least 15 points, then our girls kept hitting cross courts a lot rather than playing off the blocks like Penn St started doing.  Have to test them rather than trying to go around them.

They showed a replay and it hit the net and not a PSU player.

The game came down to PSU game planning to stop Nebraska’s outside hitters and they were ok with Jackson going off since she is only on the court half the time.

The weakest rotation of the night was when Reilly was in the front row with Allick and Landfair. When the setter is in the front row, they only have 2 options up front or an OH from the back row. When Reilly was in the back row, she had Jackson, Murray, and Beason to choose from in the front row. The problem all night was no one outside of Jackson (and maybe Allick) could get going.

I love watching Nebraska volleyball and this group of women made it easy to cheer on. With that said, Cook needs to tell Landfair she can transfer or play off the bench. She has no elevation when attacking on the net and is a liability defensively. He must go after 1 transfer and then ride with Pierce or the incoming freshman Sigler.

Sorry HuskerNarion. I lumped my analysis in with your reply.

Hi Waldo-There was a different play that they called a net violation on Nebraska and gave the point to PSU.  Nebraska challenged and one that point, and had the refs not blown the whistle, Nebraska would have won the point rather than a redo.  Overall the officiating was fine though.

The team was cruising in set 2, PSU made adjustments, and Nebraska failed to adjust back well enough. We did not set the middle enough and our block became nonexistent after Set 2.  Penn State also picked up their defense and serve in the latter sets while Nebraska, especially Beason, took more weak swings.  Something seemed off with Beason these final 6 weeks of the season.  She did not look happy and did not play very well.  I actually think Landfair was far more effective in the home stretch than Beason.

Landfair is good at hitting off the top of the block and placing her shots, I’ll give her that. Both of them just didn’t have that killer instinct you need down the stretch. So many tip shots against PSU in both matches.
