2024 NCAA Tournament Final Four - Huskers vs Penn State

Krause was better.  She never came fully back from the injury!

Admittedly I have not watched as much PSU volleyball as Nebraska, but I cannot recall a time when Krause had 2 dominant performances in big matches as CJ had against us.  From a skill perspective I believe they have similar qualities but it's more about who shows up in big matches. I read somewhere that CJ will never forgive Cook for picking up Beason and sitting her on the bench all last season.  Beason was definitely a liability the latter half of the season.  I am now curious who else was on our bench this season that has some major skills to be good next year...hopefully as a Husker.

I don't know much about volleyball, but it seemed like Penn State was a lot more aggressive in the last half of the night.  They attacked the ball and sent it over the net with more velocity than the Huskers.  The Husker set ups didn't lead to near as many fast balls.  Most balls that went over the net by the Huskers towards the end looked very manageable.

So, disappointing, but this was a very fun team to watch all year.  It seemed like they dominated so many teams and swept them, that they didn't have the experience of being in close 5 set matches and got flustered when it happened and didn't have confidence to push through it.

I had two guys at the match last night.  One of them texted me this morning asking about a play.  In the 4th set, I think it was PSU 7 and NE 8.  They scored a point because we were called for in the net making it 8-8.  We challenged it and won the challenge which, should have made it PSU 7 NE 9.  But, they believe the scorer took the point away from PSU but never gave NE the point.  So, it ended up being still 7-8 instead of 7-9.  We ended up losing the set 23-25.  Does anyone remember that?  I don't.  One of the guys that was at the game pays way more close attention to the game than most....and he thought this happened too.  I didn't have the match taped to go back and rewatch it.

The ref blew the play dead because they felt a Nebraska player touched the net. Cook challenged the play, and Nebraska did not touch the net. PSU did not have the opportunity to return the blocked ball since it was blown dead, so the point was replayed and no point was awarded to either team.

I don't know if that was the same play, but there was a point where Bergen Reilly seemed to be questioning the score.  But I didn't understand what she was getting at.

I never understood that call either. That one might have been a Murray double hit in the back row (off a first hit set) but the broadcast booth never elaborated and they never replayed it.

There should be some room for discretion on the point in that rule. Like in football when they rule a runner down before fumbling and replay shows a fumble, as long as there is a clear recovery it can be overturned. The ball was down, no one had a shot at it. But the way the rule is, they unfortunately got it right.

I assumed it was questioning the score because she didn't realize the overturned net violation didn't give us a point, but yeah there was some other weird stuff that wasn't talked about. The announcers also thought maybe she was questioning whether Penn State was in the wrong rotation, which could easily have happened if there was confusion on whether the point was to Nebraska or had been replayed.

She had her best 2 games against us but that does not mean that she did not have other good games.  And she has shown her potential under the biggest spotlight.
I agree that she stepped up at on the stage.  But she didn't have any other good games.  She's been fairly average the entire year.  The stats are out there for anyone to see.  By far her two biggest games this year have come against Nebraska.

I'm not saying she isn't a good player.  She's clearly shown that's not the case.  What I'm saying is there's only 6 spots on the court and you have to role with what you have.  She either didn't want to wait or she couldn't crack the rotation.  She made the decision to leave and it'd be silly to argue that it wasn't the right decision for her.
