2024 Transfer Portal Ins/Outs

What am I missing?  The portal didn't open until today, teams can't contact a player until they are in the portal, & Butler is "down to 3 schools" on the eve of the portal opening.  I'm trying to figure out how this isn't everything wrong with the transfer portal in plain sight.  He's not a grad transfer.  Can players contact schools?

I recall a claim Johnson had already been contacted by 20 schools and NU reportedly already has a visit set up with a LB from Fresno State.  How is any of this technically different than the improper contact Iowa had with the Bama player?

For the most part it's through agents, or they pretend it is. Agents can be in contact with schools whenever they want, and they can be in contact with the player whenever they want. It's dumb, but no one is getting in trouble for it.

Some players were also in the portal early - IIRC, there's a school-specific portal window when the HC is fired or leaves. So players from Purdue could have been in the portal already, and maybe Fresno as well? They didn't technically fire their guy, but he was an interim and they recently hired the official HC.

Appreciate it.  This seems like something that needs to be cleaned up because this is still tampering in professional sports.

Player js allowed to make contact, not school.  NCCA has no teeth & players are getting contacted prior to:entering!

Iowa was contacting Proctor during the season as I recall. I don't know the extent to the contact, could have been of the happy birthday, good game variety or they may have been more in depth transfer talk. Either way, I have no sympathy for Iowa.
