A scary statistic about Watson and CC games

Shawn Watson's job performance/playcalling during Conference Championship games.

Watson has called plays for 5 Big 12 Championship games. 1 for Nebraska and 4 for Colorado.

2009: Texas 13, Nebraska 12 (Alex Henery booted four field goals).

2005: Texas 70, Colorado 3.

2004: Oklahoma 42, Colorado 3.

2002: Oklahoma 29, Colorado 7 (Jeremy Bloom had an 80-yard punt return for a TD for the Buffs)

2001: Texas 37, Colorado 39

This statistic scares me about the upcoming game. Only gathering 25 points total in the past 4 CC games. I will take 25 to 39 points against Oklahoma with our defense. Anything less than that, is just pathetic.

Didn't like Watson's qoute "It's just part of the deal," he said. "It's that way everywhere. We work hard to put together plans. We don't worry about it, at least I don't. I could care less."

This was discussed recently, but by the way, that quote of Watson's you put up there is talking about the criticism and 2nd-guessing of playcalls from armchair OCs. It's basically the correct answer and how any coach deals with criticism from fans who think they know better. Not "Maybe I should take some cues from them", but "Just got to keep doing what I do and ignore it."

Same goes for players in the spotlight. They have to internalize and not worry about what the press clippings are saying, and deflect away all the vitriol. It comes with the territory.

Nothing wrong to be found with that quote.

usually these kinds of statistics are meaningless. just another way to be paranoid before entering the big one.

i trust our guys this year to get the players ready. no use worrying over track records

I was actually pointing more to the idea that Watson is too conservative when it comes to playcalling for big time games such as the Big 12 CC game.

@Zoogies: what thread was this discussed in? One of the many threads talking about him getting fired?

Yeah, I guess so. I don't remember if there was a standalone thread or not, there have been a lot of Watson threads. I was just noting that it was talked about before. Not going to bother to go back and dig up those threads if they are there.

Conservative?

Last year...definitely. But that was Bo even more than Watson, and with the state of the offense and injuries you can hardly fault them.

2005, 2004? I think it was more like CU was a marginal team in a very mediocre North division getting blown out by a team that would go on to play in the title game. Not sure about 2002. I believe Chris Brown was out for that game but I can't really comment on a situation I know nothing about, and of course, 2001 CU pulled off a big upset. Have to be balanced with the credit Watson gets in either direction for any of his time at CU, because he was an OC in name only. Sort of like Carl is DC, but this is really Bo's defense for the most part. Or Matt Patricia is the guy who I think has the top defensive responsibility in New England, but you know it's Belichick's defense. Difference there being Patricia actually doesn't have the title.

you sorta touched on my point. if you go back years and years you have to look at everything, not just the final scores. unless youre prepared to watch all the games over again (or have), you cant be so quick to pin it on wats.

and again, its meaningless to worry about this kind of stuff

Also worth noting, Shawn Watson was an offensive coordinator by title only in Colorado. I think it's been established that he didn't call plays, the same way he didn't in '06 and most of '07 here at Nebraska.

No "results" will ever change the SW apologist's mind. It's locked tighter than a drum and NOTHING will ever change it.

maybe we should already start discussing what wats did wrong in saturdays CC game. im sure we can come pretty close to the actual b^&%#ing that will inevitably follow

No doubt you have your excuses already cut and pasted for easy access. Practice makes perfect!
Its not that it is that no matter what kind of game Watson calls he will be critized for it. The eniter 2009 season he was "too conservitive" in the A&M game he throws a pass on 3 and 7 in filed goal range and all of a sudden he takes too many stupid chances. No matter what he does this board will not respect him. Even if we score 30 points and lose by 1 it will some how be watson's fault. If we lose 6-3 we a bunch of fumbles and dropped passes it will be Watsons fault.

50+ pts over Oklahoma......lol!!

Disregarding a "one" yd drive (due to a pick), your great hero has scored zero TDs the last three games vs OU & Tx.

I really don't know what you guys are smoking....but I want it!
