AD Shawn Eichorst issues a statement

Oh let's not kid ourselves about it being a rebuilding project. It absolutely is a rebuilding project. That doesn't excuse the results, and I'm not happy with the coaches and Eichorst, but you have to look pass the wins and loss column.

Bo left a team that was so fundamentally bad it wasn't funny. Tackling, sustaining blocks and penalties were a nightmare over the last 3 years. Let's not forget how bad our S&C had gotten across the board. They weren't prepared at the most basic level to play football.

He also poisoned the well when he left town. There are a number of players on this team that haven't bought into the new program. Riley shares some of the blame for this. He needs to take those players off the field, and yes some of them are playing. Charlie Strong has had to go through similar issues at UT. Either get on the bus or stay at the station. We have other people who want to ride.

Recruiting was also less than stellar and will require hard work to be built back up. It wasn't a total breakdown as there is some talent here, certainly better than the numbers show. But it hasn't been great either.

Now this staff has made enough mistakes this season to warrant some heat. But this was absolutely a rebuild. This team was no where near competing for any kind of trophies before Riley & co. stepped in.

He must be getting pressure from the administration or boosters and that's why he released this statement, if it was just pressure from the fans I can't imagine him caring enough to have one of his assistants type a letter.

First, I have read some awesome replies here people, thanks for that.

This is just odd. Why come out and say that? Why now? Yes, the fan base is ticked off, but this doesn't change that. We still and always will be Husker fans. The stadium will fill up for the final 2 home games this year. Like always, we'll be screaming our a$$ off for the Huskers. This kind of shows how bad you treated Bo when he was here. The best point I read above is that you're doing this to save your job. Sneaky, cuz it's Mike Riley and his staff whose jobs you act like you're trying to save. You know, if he fails (and he is) you are out. Wouldn't the decent thing be to admit this didn't work and tell Huskernation you had good intentions and then hop on the first train out of town?

Ya, I don't get it. Rebuild?? Why the hell are we rebuilding? There was plenty of talent here to win 7-10 games this year

Bo was right about this much: Eichorst is a total pu&&y and a c&&t.
Is this really necessary? Who cares what Bo thinks. He did himself no favors to retain the head coaching position at Nebraska and hated you (the fan).
Forgive me if I don't give substantial credence to the grumblings of a man whose been fired.
For someone who claims to not care what Bo thinks, you seem to give enough credence to overstate and misappropriate a past grumbling of his
How is that a misappropriation, exactly? He verbally abused and criticized the fans while creating a clear culture of distrust between the team and fan base. There's nothing wrong or dishonest about what I said, but nice try.

To rehash a fired coach's sentiments towards his former boss is petulant and irrelevant at this point, and the fact that one of our own fans is reverberating his disgusting language is ridiculous.

SE has had a poor choice of words within the past year. It's not like Riley inherited a dumpster fire like Bo did. In most people's eyes, he fired a 9-win coach and is now paying the price. There was nothing to rebuild, all Riley had to do was maintain the foundation and improve upon it and he successfully failed.

Where did I say "real" fan. I said "normal" fan. The ones that can actually see what is happening, and understand it takes awhile to clean up a shithole of a program that Nebraska football has become over the past 10-15 years. The "normal" fan that doesn't call for the firing of everyone in the athletic department, because people are so impatient, and believe that "by golly, we are Nebraska, we should win by 70 every weekend" The "normal" fan that sees that all of the "real" fans are undermining recruiting and creating a self fulling prophecy of more and more ineptitude that is Nebraska football.

Go ahead, get your wish of Trev Alberts, and Scott Frost or whatever other former players you want in here to run the athletic department. Never mind the fact that you will have permanently set this program back for good, and burned whatever last hope there was of having a return to prominence.

And if you are brain dense enough not to understand what the point of this post is, then you are part of the problem, and not part of the solution.
We don't have to win by 70, but we need to win. This "shithole of a program" had no problems winning 9 games last year, and this same AD that is claiming it's now a full rebuild said we had players that could win championships.

No Nebraska team should ever get blown out by f'ing Purdue and also lose to Illinois. No Nebraska team should have 6 losses before November. No Nebraska team should have 9 losses on the year (and that is coming).

He's trying to defend his hire (which he has to lest he lose his own job) and keep the fans in the stands. I think that's all this really boils down to.

This is the most shocking part of it all. I think most people, myself included, believed this was not a rebuild hire. Many of us felt that Nebraska had hit a ceiling and just needed the last push to get over the edge.

I expected growing pains. I believed a 6-7 win season was possible but that we wouldn't sink much lower than that. I believe even the coaches didn't foresee this, particularly when Riley said around the time of the BYU game that this was the most "talented" team he ever coached. If that's the case, why have they performed so poorly?

The other side to this is that completely changing coaching staffs and a culture does not always work as fast as you want it to. In hindsight, any expectations of winning 9 or 10 games was probably wrong.

I think what we're seeing right now is a confluence of everything we all chose to ignore - the possibility that the talent, coaching, culture and expectations were not going to be even remotely on the same page.

Who's the architect here??????

What the best administrators and coaches have in common is a consistent commitment to teaching young minds to do things the right way and to instill a values system that emphasizes hard work, discipline, loyalty, teamwork, compassion and excellence. Those principles coupled with a positive attitude generally result in championships.
That's quite a culture change from previous regime.
^ Agree. We'll get there -- at least, we won't suffer a program we can't be proud of in the meantime.

Would anyone trade this season for another typical 9-win season under Bo? I suspect many would. I don't see what's all that special about being unranked that makes us Nebraska fans accept that amount of boorishness and lack of class for the guy representing the university, and placed in charge of its student-athletes.

Between the talent and the mentality Bo left in place, I believe a brick-by-brick rebuild is right. Talent wise, no -- even better management and recruiting isn't going to dramatically transform the raw talent blueprint. Mentality wise, the thing more crucial and defining for a team's performance, absolutely and totally.
"I think we have kids in our program that are capable of winning championships."

Shawn Eichorst, November 30, 2014.

Even Eichorst is calling bulls*** on you (and himself) as of last year. Why you continue to defend him appears to be some sort of demented Stockholm Syndrome, it appears.
There probably are a couple of kids in our program that are capable of winning championships. Unfortunately there are only about 5, when you need about 40 or 50.
But why did nobody say this when MR was hired? All we heard was that MR would improve and win championships. Nothing was said about suffering through a losing season or rebuilding.
